Meet Paul Heltzel of Air Venice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Heltzel.

Paul, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was actually a tenant at the hotel (Air Venice) while it was still mainly an apartment building. I lived there for about a year, working from home, but then picked up a job in Silverlake. After commuting from Venice to Silverlake for about a month, I decided it was time to move closer to work. The day I went to submit my 30-Day Notice to Vacate from the hotel, the manager offered me a part-time position, so I decided to continue living there. I worked both jobs until I gradually moved my way up to the General Manager position at the hotel and left the Silverlake job.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been entirely smooth. The original general manager was never around and was constantly giving me his work to complete. I did every aspect of managing that building while I was just an office assistant, which meant I often worked overtime. I thought this was just how it was, so I worked hard and didn’t complain. Soon enough, though, it became apparent to the owner that the general manager wasn’t doing much at all. The general manager was eventually released and I took his spot.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Air Venice – what should we know?
Air Venice is a hotel located on the Venice Boardwalk at the end of Rose Avenue. We’re known for having an ocean view from every single room in the building, and I believe this is what sets us apart from most other rental hotels on the boardwalk. We’re right next to the best restaurant on the boardwalk–Venice Ale House–and, obviously, as close to the water as a boardwalk property can get. Our location can’t be beat.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Discipline, specifically with scheduling. I’m able to keep the big and small tasks in order so that everything is taken care of on-time. Whether it’s a rollaway bed request or a 30-room block reservation, I’m able to take the big and small steps to make sure all the wheels are in motion at the right time so things go smoothly. I keep a written record of everything I have to do–I don’t leave anything to memory because to me, that’s leaving it up in the air. I use my phone calendar more than anyone I know, and I’m the only person I know who’s not in college but still uses a notebook every day.
