Meet Kayla Aimone of Aimone Designs in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Aimone.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always had a passion for art in all areas. Since as long as I can remember, I was constantly making any art. Once I was nine years old, I discovered sewing and fashion design after my aunt gave me Alexander Mcqueen’s book Savage Beauty. From that day on, I was constantly sewing and creating.

When I started High School at Tabor Academy, a boarding school in Marion Massachusetts. I found photography. I fell in love with the darkroom and sports photography. All I wanted to do was take pictures, my fashion design got pushed to the side. I was very excited about my work as a photographer. I wanted to do fashion photography. When it was time for college, my dad put Art Center College of Design on my list of schools. I only had two requirements for schools, they had to have a photography program and a fashion design program. All the other schools I looked at I was unimpressed with the photography programs.

At Art Center, I fell in love with the photography program, even though there was no fashion design. I thought it was something I could live without. I thought I was content and focused on photography until last spring when I decided to make a collection to photograph. I rediscovered my passion and realized fashion design was something I couldn’t live without. I am continuing my career at Art Center and do both of my passions as my career. I plan on doing fashion and shooting my own work as my own photographer and designer.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been as smooth as I would like, but it also hasn’t been particularly rough. I had a hard time at the beginning trying to do both fashion and photography. It took a lot for me to move from Massachusetts to California, it was a big move and a challenge for me to live on my own. I also have had some struggles while being here but I would consider myself resilient and have pushed through them even if it has made making work harder.

Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
I am working on creating a brand for myself as Aimone designs and do couture fashion for women, and shoot all my own clothes. I feel like it’s hard to find someone who is as passionate about two things as me. I am just starting out so branding is something I am currently working on. I just recently volunteered at LAFW (LA fashion week) and am working on finding a place for my work in the industry. I think the next step for me is to work in the fashion industry and at some point end up in Paris.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think that for the most part I am fairly lucky, I am lucky that my parents are so supportive, even if it took them a second to get there. I have had some bad luck recently as I tore my acl a few weeks ago and will now have to get surgery which will force me to take a break from my work to recover. But overall, I feel that I have fairly good luck, knock on wood.
