Today we’d like to introduce you to Aidan Park.
Aidan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Aidan Park and I am stand up comic from Los Angeles who has now become “The Comedian with “good advice”
I guess I have always been interested in self-help and self-development! So much so that I have certfications in several techniques int he area of self development that I was just planning on using for my personal benefic really… So as I found myself speaking on my interest in these topics in my stand up comedy act, I started getting questions from my followers seeking advice and guidance on their personal problems!
You wouldn’t believe the questions I got! They vary from “my boyfriend cheated what do you think I should do?” to “I am gay in a small conservative town” to “My hair dye job went wrong and now it looks like i’m a Cyndi Lauper impersonator gone wrong.. HELP!”.
I started having so much fun answering questions that I decided to take it a step further with the whole advice thing and start a show called ‘what to do show” with my partner Jamie Roddy, I started writing a column for ThePrideLA in which I give bi weekly advice and started to incorporate the QandAs in my social media content and my stand up comedy act!
Has it been a smooth road?
NO! But I believe this is precisely the reason why I am able to be helpful to my listeners and followers with a sense of humor!
Honestly, I work hard for my positive attitude and as a result I think sometimes people think I’ve had it easy! But the truth is… I didn’t even learn english until I was in middle school!
I was brought here as an undocumented immigrant from Korea, and was raised by my single grandmother in government housing. I was also gay in a super conservative Korean environment… Also, I was widowed from a 5 year relationship with my boyfriend, so I’ve had my fair share of challenges, along with many opportunities to practice the advice that I preach.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Aidan Park – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am most proud of the way that I stuck to my guns as far as my style of comedy. I don’t actually watch a whole lot of comedy myself and kinda do my own thing and say things that interest me. In doing so I feel I have been able to develop my own style which has strong emphasis on a positive connection with audiences (with audience work and rapport building) within a base of telling personal stories with punchlines!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I used to HATE Los Angeles. But now I am in love! I moved here from San Francisco where you did everything that you wanted to do by foot whereas in LA you have to drive or take a long commute everywhere…
But I have to say I got used to LA and I actually have found a way to spend my time in the car as a way to recharge! At any point of my day, I can retreat to my car to have ALONE TIME, Meditate, eat, have a private conversation on the phone and I feel that is so valuable!
Also, It was a little lonely at first because LA is a town where things won’t just come to you or show up at your door… you have to actively seek out activities, friends and things to do…
BUT what’s great about that is that people you do end up meeting have put in some effort to make it happen and so often they are more full of life, more adventurous, more curious! It’s so interesting! 🙂
