Meet Ahdee Abramson of Pet ‘n Shape in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ahdee Abramson.

Ahdee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in the pet industry, really. My dad ran a pet supply distribution business for over twenty years, and my mother, brother, and I also worked in the company. On summer breaks from school, I would clean up and stock shelves. I even went back to work in the family business after backpacking across Europe and teaching English in Spain when I struggled to find a job back home.

Unfortunately, the family business experienced partnership issues and was forced to wind down operations. During that time, my dad saw an opportunity to break into the natural pet treats market. We traveled overseas with my uncle, who has extensive international business experience and found a manufacturer together. We eventually received our first container of product in June 2005, and Pet ‘n Shape Natural Treats was born.

I first started selling out of the back of my car, going store-to-store in and around California, Arizona, and Nevada. I’d walk in with my box of treats, fill the order straight from my trunk if I was lucky enough to get the shop interested in our treats, collect a check, and move on to the next store.

Over the last 15 years, with many ups and downs, Pet ‘n Shape has developed distribution in both local, independent pet shops and large retail stores across the nation. We also supply natural pet treats to online giants Amazon and Chewy.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. There have been a lot of bumps along the way that forced us to pivot.

From port strikes and sudden tariff increases affecting our product importation to losing key employees and even our number one customer, I’ve wanted to quit hundreds of times over the past fifteen years.

But we’ve managed to keep moving forward and have been able to overcome whatever has been thrown at us thus far and grow a national brand.

Pet ‘n Shape – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our story of serving happiness to people and pets began in 2005 when our first container of product arrived.

We have grown considerably since 2005, but the core foundation of our family business remains the same: one size does not fit all pets. From bite-sized to mega bones, crunchy to chewy, our treats fit your pets’ unique needs. All our treats and chews are made from premium-quality ingredients without artificial additives, colors, or preservatives and are free from wheat, corn, and soy.

We also believe pet families don’t need to break the bank to provide their furry family members a natural, premium-quality treat or chew unique to their size, dietary preferences, and flavor palette. We know pet parents deserve a simple, honest treat they can trust to reward their pet.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I got my start in the pet industry working with my dad in our family business, so a lot of credit is due to him. Unfortunately, my dad has passed, but he and another industry veteran, Bob, taught me a lot about entrepreneurial grit.

I’ve been very fortunate to have had great mentors and advisors along the way, including my mentor Peter, who I’ve worked with from the start of the Pet ‘n Shape journey and still consult with today.

I’m proud of the success Pet ‘n Shape has experienced because of my family, friends, business mentors, and of course, the amazing employees who have helped shape and guide the business over the past fifteen years.

As a husband and father of two young children, I’m always diligently striving for balance in my personal and professional lives. Ultimately, I’d love to help other young entrepreneurs, especially from underserved areas, so they can create successful futures for themselves.
