Meet Adria Vey of Draft & Ink Calligraphy Company in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adria Vey.

Adria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved art! A trip to a craft store was one of my favorite things to do with my mom as a child (and now I go far too often). I come from a super creative and fun-loving family who taught me that you can do anything you set your mind to.

Throughout school, I took part in as many creative classes as I could. Senior year of high school, four of my six classes were electives and some form of art! I was not an academic kid and was obsessed with makeup artistry at the time. I knew that college was not right for me and went straight into the workforce out of high school. I worked at a makeup counter and loved the creative side!

I continued doing whatever art I could and naturally fell into modern calligraphy with its popularity booming online. I’ve always loved making fun posters and homemade birthday cards with a handwritten touch.

When I moved out of my parents house, I bought a chalkboard for my kitchen to write my meal plans onto and this is really where my passion blossomed. My weekly chalkboard art caught the attention of visitors and my sister asked me to create a welcome sign for her destination wedding in 2018. The wedding coordinator let me know I should consider lettering professionally, and it really planted a seed in me! On that same trip, I bought my iPad and Apple Pencil and fell in love with digital art.

At the end of 2018, I started prepping to launch my business. Once I thought up a name for it and launched my website, Instagram and Etsy, Draft & Ink Calligraphy Company was officially launched in March 2019.

I am so blessed to have been able to leave my full-time corporate job as an administrative assistant to peruse Draft & Ink full time in October 2019. My clients are the best and I’ve had the best time creating something special for each and every one of them.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve got to say- I think I’m very fortunate to have had the opportunity to leave my full-time job so soon after launching my business. Being self-employed is super awesome and everything I’ve dreamed of, but there has definitely been some bumps in the road.

It was scary leaving my job! I was so exhausted working nights and weekends on my business when I wasn’t at my full-time job. It was hard to really focus on what I wanted for Draft & Ink’s future when I only had enough time to complete client work. I was not advertising, updating my website, or creating any art for myself. It was super draining and I was not able to spend as much time with my loved ones.

Enough was enough and I knew I had to leave my full-time job so I could live my dream! Sometimes you just have to go for it which is terrifying-and that’s how you know it’s your passion. When you are scared and excited, nervous and ready. That’s how I knew this was the only path!

Draft & Ink Calligraphy Company – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Draft & Ink Calligraphy Company specializes in personalized and completely custom modern calligraphy, typography and illustration.

The name Draft & Ink comes from my process. Whenever it’s possible, I send a draft to my client to ensure we are on the same page for a design. Then it’s inked and delivered! I think my process and customer service really set me apart from others. I pride myself in really creating whatever the client has in mind, even if I’ve never done something similar and they ask “can you customize (literally anything)” and I say “let’s do it!”.

I love creating digital art for printing such as invitations, save the dates, event flyers, logos, you name it! I’m known for my hand painted doormats that are also completely customizable.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment for me was preparing for my first craft fair, of course leaving my corporate job to pursue my business full time was a huge step, but prepping to sell my things in person was such a rewarding experience.

This was a proud moment for me because I honestly had no idea where to start or what I was doing -I just went for it! I documented my experience and preparation on my Instagram stories and got a really great response. This fair was promoting shopping local for the Christmas season, which is so important! For my first fair, it went well! I customized ornaments and reusable water bottles on the spot which is something that no other vendor was providing, and it really set me apart!

I had a really great time and can’t wait to sell at other fairs this year!
