Today we’d like to introduce you to Adonica Pedraza.
Adonica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My Journey began early on as a child. My parents had me in a private school early in life where I took art classes. That class always intrigued me and sparked a sense of creativity I never knew I had. As I grew older, I continued to create in high school. After high school, I attended a school called Makeup Designory where I became a certified makeup artist I wanted to tap into all aspects of creating. I specialized in beauty and special effects makeup. I spent a lot of time after makeup school working on film sets and print shoots. As time passed, I got lost in the world and steered away from my dreams I started working for a mortgage company and stopped creating. In 2016 I was struggling with my grandmother who had stage 4 cancer. Till this day it was one of the hardest things I have ever endured in my life. The day my grandmother past I got so lost within myself and didn’t know a way to pull myself out of the darkness.
One day I woke up and had the urge to start creating again, I took myself to the store purchased the supplies I needed and began my art piece. After creating this, I felt a sense of relief and closure. This is when I realized I needed to continue to create and follow my passion. Of course, as time goes on you get lost with working. I got lost in the moment working full time and not following my passion. I worked years towards getting a license to become a mortgage loan officer. When that moment came and I began my career as a loan officer I woke up one day and realized this isn’t me. I want to make a difference in this world through my art and creativity. So I quit my full-time job to become an artist and follow my passion. I now currently teach kids art and participate in multiple group shows. I strive to continue my growth as an artist and to continue inspiring others.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not. A lot of the struggles I’ve had have been within myself. I think the hardest part is not giving up on your dreams. It’s easy to say never mind ill just go back to my old job and continue what I used to do. But I constantly remind myself that this is more than just picking up a piece of paper and drawing. I want to inspire others around me to follow there passion. It may be difficult but the end of the road is so fulfilling when it brings you happiness. A quote I live by “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step – Lao Tzu”. All it takes is that single step. There’s always going to be bumps in the road but nothing is ever easy when you’re working towards what you love.
