Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Wald.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The YES Bar was born out of love six years ago in my kitchen in Laurel Canyon, California. My younger son had a lot of food sensitivities at the time, as well as a few health challenges, and I found myself constantly having to say “no” to things he wanted to eat. It made me sad, and I vowed right then and there to whip up a treat so delicious, and so healthy that anytime he asked for one, I would be able to say a resounding YES!
I collected all the healthy yummy foods I could find in my kitchen that were all naturally free of gluten, dairy, soy, and corn. I started with nuts and seeds. I added some honey and maple syrup, some pure vanilla bean powder, some cinnamon, some dried fruits, and coconut butter. I added chia and flax for an extra dose of nutrition. And then, I threw in dark chocolate, well, just because chocolate is awesome. I experimented for months until these little portable yummies had just the right consistency.
From day one, even before they were perfect, my son loved them. My other son loved them. Our friends who came over loved them. My husband loved them. He started using them for his 50-mile bike rides. His cycling buddies wanted some. We brought them as snacks to birthday parties and other people wanted to buy them. We went to some local stores, they loved them and wanted to sell them. You get the picture.
We realized that even with all the many, many bars that are out there in the world, there really wasn’t any other bar just like the YES bar. What’s different about us? Well, we are grain free and we are paleo friendly. Every single ingredient in our bar is a REAL FOOD. We have no funky binders or preservatives or fillers of any kind. We are not just a bunch of healthy bird seed stuck together and we’re also not a glorified candy bar. But, at the end of the day, what really makes people love our bars is that THEY TASTE THAT GOOD. I think it’s because I didn’t set out to “make a bar.” I set out to make a delicious treat that was 100 percent healthy. Join us and share the love!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a mom is hard enough. Being a mom and an entrepreneur is a world unto its own. But, every night I go to bed, I feel blessed that I am creating something that someday my boys will be able to really appreciate. I think it is just the coolest thing that you can make something, and then actually bring it out into the world. And what a great lesson that is for my kids! Whether it is the recipe itself, or the package design or the website, these were all things that at some point were just an idea in my mind. To see them take shape, and struggle through the creative process as they evolve, and then to ultimately wind up out there in the world as a product anyone can buy, well that is just INCREDIBLE. Not to mention, I have met the NICEST people. Customers, other makers, store owners, packaging people, just so many wonderful people who have helped us become whatever it is we are becoming. And, of course, a very special thank you to my wonderful partners, Jeremy and Brennan. The journey has been nothing short of amazing and we are just getting started…

WHY SAY YES?
What makes YES Bars so unique and different is our commitment to a complete anti-inflammatory profile of nuts, seeds, and clean carbs. We don’t use any grains, fillers, preservatives, soy or refined sweeteners like agave or brown rice syrup. Just the highest quality ingredients, because we believe you deserve it.
The composition of our bar is very distinctive. We bake in small batches and each bite in a YES Bar is a little bit different and vs the same generic taste, you get with every other bar. Chewy, crunchy, nutty, fruity, slightly sweet and salty.
The Yes Bar proudly supports the Heart Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Our beautiful packaging is made from craft paper. Our 6-pack point of sale display boxes are FSC certified – 100% compostable and recyclable and come from responsibly managed forests.
