Meet Abi Perl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abi Perl.

Abi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a professional dancer, on-camera host, content creator and producer. It has been such a challenging yet incredible journey leading me to where I am in my life and career thus far. Growing up a dancer, I always had big dreams, and when I was asked growing up “What do you want to be?” my response was, ” I don’t know, but all I know is I don’t want to be average. I want to live my purpose, I want to make a difference.” Fast forward to college, I lost a sense of identity during that period of time in my life. During those years, I endured my parent’s chaotic divorce, stopped performing, fell into using recreational drugs and alcohol and continuously struggled with crippling depression, anxiety and thoughts of suicide; leaving me feeling completely stripped of who I was or who I wanted to become. Coming out of college, I felt lost and confused. I returned home to South Florida where I decided I wanted to get back into dancing. More so because it’s been my self-expression a form of therapy if you will. It was always my passion and always what made me feel alive and at home. I slowly started taking local classes again and subbing for teachers who taught younger kids.

A few years went by and was now 25. I was living a hum drum life in Florida, unhappy and unsatisfied with my daily routine. I was teaching dance and working for a small entertainment company but I felt like I was meant to do more, I longed and dreamed for something bigger. I was told by a few family members that maybe if in a year or two I didn’t “make it”, I should start thinking about a different career path. I tuned that out mostly because there was always a small, whispering voice that told me to “just keep going”. So, no matter how difficult things were, financially, emotionally, or physically, I didn’t give up on myself. I read every self-help book and did everything I knew I could to pull myself out of my depression and to get myself in a place where I could go full force into the life of my dreams.  Two years later, I auditioned for a national television show executively produced and judged by Jennifer Lopez called “World of Dance” on NBC. When I get the call that I made it on the show, I knew this was my moment. Little did I know life was about to take a turn in the direction I had for so long been striving for. I was flown out to Los Angeles for the competition. When the show ended and we were given our return flight tickets home, I ripped mine up and made the decision to stay. With one suitcase, a little bit of money and a heart full of hope.

I was waiting tables, worked for a food delivery service, enrolled in background work, and interned at LA’s newest dance studio Playground LA to make ends meet. I never felt like I was too good to do whatever it took for me to achieve greatness. I was always overworked, exhausted, and stressed but I knew that I had to keep going and fighting for it. Now, only three years into living in LA, I no longer wait tables or deliver food. I dance full time, started my own talk show with my co-host Paige Davis called “Chicks Eating Out”, and work alongside so many incredible projects getting to perform, create and produce. I am also in the works of my own non-profit called “Stars4Cause” which I’m so incredibly excited about!!! My burning desire to inspire and spark others to pursue their passion and fearlessly chase their dreams was only realized because of what I’ve experienced along the way. I have chosen a life where I believe living in unknown is the most beautiful place to live in because anything is possible.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

Suffering with crippling anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, low-self esteem, divorce and abuse, I have been through a lot from a very young age, to say the least. These things added to so many of the challenges and growing pains you would normally face and made the challenges even more challenging. But I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I didn’t have the experiences I did. They were my biggest teachers and through them, offered the most vital lessons I’ve learned in life thus far. Nothing worth it is easy, I’ve learned. I’m in a place in my life where I’ve overcome every single one of these things and I’m ready to speak out about my journey through it all.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I would proudly say I’m mostly known as a professional dancer, but I have evolved in so many ways throughout my career in other arenas. I think a lot of people believe it’s hard to do it all, they say to just focus on one thing. I’m so blessed to have a  creatives and business side to my personality. I have started a talk show, transitioned into hosting, produced and casted, casted for music videos, commercials, digital content and more simultaneously as well as putting together my own non-profit which will help build awareness and provide donations for hundreds of charitable organizations and research-focused foundations. It’s my mission to inspire everyone I come in contact with to pursue their passion, to make this life count, and to live on purpose.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe that preparation + opportunity= LUCK. THIS is the formula I believe in!!! Luck is a myth. It all comes down to YOU. I believe we all have an innate ability to do something, we all have a purpose. It’s about tapping into it.

I think that there is a misconception of what luck is and how it is perceived. It’s all about hard work, work ethic and being a good person. Your energy will align you and your goals with everything you will need to succeed if you truly believe in what you are doing.
