Meet Abena Tetteh of ABWigs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abena Tetteh.

Abena, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After working in a salon for almost two years starting at the age of 16, I started a wig-making business in my dorm room. This business would help me connect with people across the United States who want to wear wigs to protect their natural hair, and/or have versatility in the hairstyles that they wear. By making great quality wigs for an affordable price, I am able to create my empire.

Has it been a smooth road?
People often think that being a young entrepreneur is easy because you are working for yourself. This is absolutely not true. Being a college student and a young entrepreneur, I have definitely encountered struggles that challenged me mentally and financially.

When starting my business, I had to learn and understand that I will not be able to elevate if I didn’t put myself out there. Putting myself “out there” was something that I struggled with when I was younger because I had low self-esteem.

Financially, I had to work multiple jobs and find some side hustles so that I could be able to afford the materials I needed to make the wigs, brand and package my wigs and have some extra money for myself so that I could be able to afford my lifestyle.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
ABWigs is a small company that specializes in wigs. Particularly lace frontal wigs and lace closure wigs that match your skin tone for a flawless and natural finish.

I am most proud of how far I’ve come as a company. When I was 16 and used to work at the salon, my job was to mostly promote the salon’s work, answer the questions and concerns the salon’s target audience had, and book appointments. When I turned 18, I started making wigs at the salon and started building up my clientele. In my mind, I have always been ABWigs. I am now able to use everything that I’ve learned working for someone else in the same field as me to be successful in my own business and that feeling is AMAZING.

I want to be able to use my business to challenge that traditional standard of beauty we have in the world that we live in today.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like my city is a great place to start a business like mine because it’s big, diverse and many people in my are willing to try new things and support small businesses.
