Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaliyah Vargas.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Hello!!! My name is Aaliyah but In the world of Art, I’m known as Papamooon. I’m a 19-year-old local artist in San Diego and art has always been a strong influence in my life. I’ve been drawing since I was younger but I took it more seriously around the age of 16 and haven’t stopped since. I help out with a non-profit group known as the paint booth in Vista California, who’s goal is to help musicians and artists get their names out into the world. I’ve created posters for festivals they’ve thrown and I’ve also worked with dirty laundry T.v. And dirty Penni fest in Los Angeles.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m an ink and paper type of gal, that’s my favorite medium to use because unlike painting it’s very forgiving. I create stickers, posters, flyers and prints as well as a few paintings. My art is very personal for me, I’ve always struggled with expressing my emotions and inner thoughts so creating art is a way for me to put my mind onto paper and allow my self-expression to be seen by others. For my creations, I’ve never liked the question “what was this inspired by?” Or “what does this piece mean?” Because when I put my art out there I like to have the viewer create their own personal connection and love for it. Art is interpretive and by me creating and putting my art out there I no longer own the piece the viewers own emotions are now tied into how they see it and who am I to tell them that what they feel is not what it means. So I ask “what does it mean to you?” And by asking that you both gain insight into each other’s thoughts and how they see the world differently from you.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
As an artist not being afraid of what you have to offer the world is so important! Get yourself out there don’t be scared of what others will think because art is art there’s no right or wrong in doing it and by that alone you are successful. Be confident in yourself and what you create and you will find no limits to what you can do and what you can offer the world.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
