Meet Aaliya and Alexis Hall of Glossocity in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaliya and Alexis Hall.

Aaliya and Alexis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Aaliya: I was inspired to start my own lip gloss company after seeing so many young entrepreneurs with their own lip gloss businesses on the app “TikTok.” I knew that I could be really successful if I put my own spin on things and separated myself from what everyone else was doing. One day, I sat down and wrote out a full business plan and showed it to my mom. She was really impressed and said that she would support me in starting my business. She gave me $100 to order all of the items we needed to get started but said that she would go half with me on all of the supplies. So, I only spent $50 to start my business. I made my first collection of 7 different lip gloss colors, designed my own website and launched it, and posted about my new business on social media. My goal was to make back the $50 that I spent, so I had enough money to buy more items to restock my lip glosses. Within a couple of days, I ended up making over $500.

Alexis: I also wanted to start a business. Originally, I wanted to design custom phone cases but found out they were much harder to make than I thought. I started brainstorming other ideas and decided I wanted to make and sell all-natural body butters and products for the skin because that was something I was really into. I’ve always loved using face masks and different lotions, so I thought it would be cool to make my own. My sister was doing really well with her lip gloss business, so I thought it would be a good idea to join her since both of our products were for the body, and we’ve always worked really well together. We decided to launch Body Party body butters as a collection under our brand, Glossocity. Since then, we’ve released many more products and are thankful for all of the support that we have received.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Aaliya: The road has been mostly smooth. The only struggle we’ve had on the way is keeping up with inventory…making sure we can get more supplies in before our products sell out.

Alexis: Yes, with everything going on with COVID-19, sometimes it takes a long time to receive our supplies, so we have to make sure we’re on top of that. We really work hard to get our products shipped out as soon as possible, but sometimes it’s out of our control. Thankfully our customers have been very patient and understanding because they know it’s not our fault.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glossocity – what should we know?
Aaliya: We sell a variety of handmade, all-natural lip and skincare products, including lip gloss, lip scrubs, body butters, and a face + body serum. What sets us apart is all of our products are handmade, vegan friendly and cruelty-free. Our top-selling products would have to be our lip glosses and body butters. We’ve also recently launched our Gloss Boss Starter Kit for those that are interested in starting their own lip gloss business. It has everything needed to get started. We also do wholesale and private label, so people can order our products in bulk at a lower cost to sell in their store, or even use their own labels to build their own brands. We’ve made it easy for others to start their own businesses and wanted to be a one-stop-shop for buying supplies.

Alexis: The thing I’m most proud of is how much our business has grown in less than three months. I would have never imagined us growing this big in such a little time. In the first half of July, we have already made more than we did in the entire month of May and June, and are on track to double our sales. It has been so exciting to see our business growing and we love making and sending out orders. We also love when our customers, who we call “Gloss Bosses,” are excited about our products and show us love on social media by tagging us in their pics.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Aaliya – I would say staying organized has been one of the most important qualities leading to our success. We’ve been really good about managing our orders, making sure that we keep everything in one place. It has just made it easier to track everything and make sure that we are getting everything packaged and shipped out.

Alexis – I think consistency is important. We make sure that we post regularly on our social media, at least 2-3 times per day so that we stay visible and keep people in the loop of what we are doing, sales we are having, new products, etc. We want to stay consistent in getting the word out about Glossocity as we work to become a beauty brand known around the world.
