Life and Work with Yadira Romero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yadira Romero.

Yadira, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing hair at the age of 16 for friends, I didn’t think it would be my profession because I was always just having fun with it. I went to school for nursing for two years until I realized it wasn’t what made me happy it was what made my parents happy. I decided I was going to go to cosmetology school and got licensed 12 years ago. I did work in a couple of salons but it didn’t work out for me, so I decided I wanted to be a freelance artist. I moved to Chicago for a few years to work for Smashbox as a makeup artist and recently moved back to Los Angeles to continue to pursue my dream as both a hair and makeup artist. I currently work out of the LA and Santa Monica/Venice area and totally love it! I have had the pleasure of doing hair and makeup for brides, quinceñeras, docu-series, and makeovers since I have been back in Los Angeles. The amount of support has been overwhelming and the best feeling is seeing the clients I have worked on completely satisfied with the services I have provided.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The beauty industry is very saturated, everyone seems to be a makeup artist lately. Understanding individuals face structure, skin, wants and needs are extremely important. Beauty to me is making sure the woman or man feels beautiful in their own skin and my goal is to enhance their features. Being in this industry definitely has not been easy for me, I will say that being confident and always evolving is super important! Do not be afraid of change because the beauty industry ALWAYS changes. Never lose sight of your passion whether you have been in the game for years or just starting out, remember you are in your own lane and nobody else!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with IG: hairandmakeupbyyadira – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I believe my work speaks for itself, I specialize in hair styling, cuts, and color as well as makeup application to enhance the natural beauty of each individual I come across. I am extremely proud to have given my time and services to non-profit organizations as well as helping women and men find the confidence to be beautiful in their own skin. I am also happy to have been a part of the Smashbox makeup artist team in Chicago, IL, I have learned so much from MJ, Aaron and Kim the lead artists and trainers from the company. My goal is to continue to be the artist I feel I was put on earth to be, I have a gift that I will continue to use which is helping and teaching people about beauty.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I do feel that opportunities have definitely opened up to a lot more women over the years. I believe this is due to us vocalizing more and making everyone aware that we too are capable of doing any and everything! We are strong, beautiful and in the words of mom “luchadoras” which translates to hustlers. Women can be what we want to be in this lifetime, I wouldn’t dare place us in a “box” because that is where we have been put for so long. I have friends from all walks of life doing great things, and the best part of it all is that we all uplift each other and are proud to be women in this day in age.
