Life & Work with Vera Lawson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vera Lawson.

Hi Vera, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been doing hair since I was in middle school. It’s always been something I loved doing. I grew up with four sisters, my mom couldn’t afford getting out hair done. As a result, we all did each other’s hair which is how I learned how to do hair. During My senior year of high school, I launched my hair extension company, offering wigs and hair bundles. At the time, I was only selling the hair extensions I wasn’t installing. My customers would always ask me, but I didn’t have enough faith in myself. A couple of months into running my hair business, I decided to start installing the extensions. My clientele grew pretty quickly since I already had a customer base from selling extensions. About nine months in, I decided to take it seriously and commit to being a full-time hairstylist about three years ago. My clientele grew very quickly through marketing on social media. I went from doing hair in my mother’s hallways to opening my own salon suite about one year later. I am so glad I started doing hair, I’ve met so many cool people& it has opened so many doors for me. Since the pandemic and people were unable to come to the salon, I am now offering ready to wear wigs That come fully customized & styled for my customers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship is not always as glamorous as it looks, especially when you are doing it yourself. There will be long sleepless nights, lost friends, and days when you will make so much money & make no money the next day. There are many things I didn’t know and am still learning as I go.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hairstylist/wig maker. I am most proud of how versatile I can get with different wigs.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For those starting out, it can be hard trying to have it all figured it. In reality, it’s a learning process. You’re never really gonna learn it all at one time. I learn more and more everyday. Entrepreneurship is a never-ending journey. Make sure to take pictures & document your journey. Always have a positive attitude & write down your goals and work hard towards them.
