Life & Work with Tracy Blom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Blom.

Hi Tracy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve enjoyed writing since I was a little girl. I would dream up entire stories, staple them together and give them to my parents. Since my early years, I’ve kept dream journals which is where you can find nearly every idea for the books that I’ve written. It took me some time to figure out why I was having dreams like this— dreams that appear as a movie with an entire storyline attached, but once I figured out what they were intended to be, I went on to create children’s books, chapter books, young adult novels, and a paranormal thriller.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I have author visits at schools, I always get the same question — why do you write? I always answer the same way. Writing is something that brings me joy and is my ‘happy place.’ I think because I find so much joy in creating stories it makes some of the challenges a bit more bearable. Something that took me a long time to learn is that you can’t trust everyone you meet and to research anyone who wants to represent your work. I have had several letdowns, whether it be from people who lied to me, weren’t who they said they were, stole royalties, and the list goes on. Each one of these situations provided an opportunity for me to grow as a person, and not one of these letdowns stopped me from writing or doing what I love.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the author of thirty-five published books— most of which are self-published. I am usually working on 1-3 books at a time and publish 2-3 books per year. Part of the work that I do involves visits to schools, museums, and children’s hospitals which is what I consider to be my favorite part about being an author. Whether it is reading a book to kids or helping them create stories of their own, it is something that brings me so much joy. Recently I started writing in other mediums, including screenplays and theatrical plays, with the goal of expanding my writing and growing as an author.

I also joined the Authors on the Air Global Radio Network and host a podcast called Books, Kids & Creations. My show features people who inspire and uplift future generations with their work and has featured anyone from astronauts to engineers, ballerinas to Olympic Champions.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
My grandpa used to say, “you could fall into a pile of *** and come out smelling like roses.” Call it luck, serendipity, or whatever you’d like — I’ve had a tremendous amount of situations where I’ve just been in the right place at the right time. I read somewhere that when you are doing what you are meant to do or living out your soul’s purpose, you step into the ‘flow’ of the universe. I think that when I started writing and going down the path of being an author, I stepped into my flow and opened doors that were meant to be opened.
