Life & Work with Teresa Foss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Foss.

Hi Teresa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Born a little fashionista, I think my parents quickly realized I was definitely “different”. I was adopted as a baby into a Caucasian family. I’m Vietnamese & Polynesian so I already looked different than my older brothers who were my parent’s biological children. I was more sensitive, creative and not as studious as my siblings.

My passion and flair for fashion and makeup developed from a very early age. Being a shy person growing up and moving frequently as an Air Force brat, it was difficult for me to adjust to so many different environments and new people. The one thing that stayed constant for me was the first visual impression that people had. Every time I moved to a new city and started at a new school, I always wanted to look my best and be memorable. My sense of style boosted my confidence to be unique and make new friends no matter where I lived. Looking my best allowed me to appear confident regardless of my timidness.

I studied Fashion Merchandising in college while working as a part-time makeup artist. I graduated from Marymount University and worked for companies such as -Anthropologie and David Yurman. The turning point in my career however was after working as a VIP matchmaker and dating coach for almost five years. I found a huge part of coaching my clients was helping them achieve an image that is attractive to the opposite sex yet reflects their personal style and boosts their own self-esteem. This rewarding feeling of helping others achieve their own style nirvana sparked the idea of having my own styling business and DC Elite Image was born in 2013. I started off by myself and only offered wardrobe styling and personal shopping. Today, I have an entire team of 12 makeup artists & hair stylists in Washington D.C. and am currently in Los Angeles to further my career and artistry.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The last two years have definitely had growing pains due to the pandemic, inflation and some very personal trauma from past abuse and depression; however, I took one day at a time, focused on staying true to my brand as well as active in my community. The strength and support from my close friends and family as well as loyal clients gave me the perseverance to keep going.

Moving to Los Angeles from Washington D.C. during a pandemic has not been easy. Juggling two completely different markets, and one of them being new has definitely been the most challenging.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a makeup artist, beauty influencer and also small business owner. My team of makeup artists & hair stylists in Washington D.C. is DC Elite Image We offer luxury onsite beauty services for weddings, special events and video/television production. In Los Angeles, I have my sister brand, Teresa Foss Beauty and am represented by The Taylor Christian Agency. I love having variety from the red carpet, to commercial, editorial, beauty and fashion shoots.

I am proud and grateful my team has survived the pandemic, and we are growing each day. As an Asian-American female business owner, it is important for me to promote diversity and inclusion not only with my team but also with our clients. We work with all ages, genders, sexes, skin tones and hair textures.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is when I’d go to this huge drugstore with my mom, and she’d let me hang out in the makeup aisle (of course) while she shopped. I was probably around nine or ten. I guess not much has changed! Lol
