Life & Work with Tara Mascara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Mascara.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always knew I wanted to help make people feel beautiful. I originally wanted to be a dentist, but after working on a dental office, I knew that wasn’t the career choice for me.

At the age of eighteen, I started working in the hospitality industry. I always came to work with a full face of makeup on and that’s where I got the nickname of Tara Mascara.

In my early twenties, I worked for the Four Seasons Beverly Hills on Doheny drive. There I worked directly with celebrities and entertainment people because that hotel was the number one hotel for press junkets. While I was working there, I met celebrity make-up artist Sam Fine. He gave me the best compliment by saying I did a beautiful Smokey eye that day. His words inspired me to go to make-up school so I can work as a professional makeup artist as well. I worked the overnight shift at the hotel from 11pm-7am and then attending school at Make-up designing from 8am-5pm. I met my mentor Jackie Mgido and immediately started working for Food Network and HGTV.

I have since worked for many different television shows, commercials, and even movies. I can do beauty makeup as well as character makeup and I feel so fulfilled and I never get bored. I am so grateful for every person who helped me get here and I am so blessed that I get to do what I love. I am never bored and always looking to continue to get better and I am always learning new techniques from my fellow artist friends.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s extremely difficult to get into our industry but with hard work and dedication, you can do anything.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do make-up for Television and Film. I can do beauty makeup as well as character makeup.

I am most proud of being head of the department for Gwen Stefani’s you make me feel like Christmas and also for being key makeup artist on Gentefied Season 2. I love creating looks for characters on a show so the actor can feel like even more like that character.

I enjoy working as department head but also I really enjoy working under other department heads so I can keep learning and growing. I just want to work hard and help our team no matter what position I am in. I continue to be grateful every day because I am living the life I always wanted. My dreams are now my reality. I am going to keep dreaming and keep creating goals so I can continue to achieve them. I hope I can inspire other people to work hard as well so they can also live the life they want to live.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think our industry is constantly changing and new trends are popping up all the time. We are always learning.
