Life & Work with Silvia Askenazi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Silvia Askenazi. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Silvia Askenazi Instructor and founder of Tango San Pedro was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and moved to Los Angeles in 2001. She started dancing Tango in 2004, learning from many of the local teachers and milongueros, and from visiting teachers and Maestros from Argentina.

In 2005 she was invited to perform in a show in Venice, California, and decided that she wanted to dedicate more time to the dance and become more than a tango afficionado. She then started to train and perform regularly in many Los Angeles venues. In 2009 she opened her own Tango studio where she teaches group and private classes and organizes Milongas and Practicas where the Tango community enjoys and shares their passion for this beautiful social dance. She travels to Buenos Aires every year to explore and improve her skills as a dancer and a teacher, training mostly at Estudio Dinzel. Her focus when teaching Tango is on improvisation and creativity. Silvia dreams with a world in which everybody is a Tango dancer.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been amazing, the only challenge has been our location in San Pedro because people think that is far away, when is only actually 20 minutes from LAX or 30 from downtown Los Angeles, or Orange County cities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an instructor of Argentine Tango, I am also an organizer of workshops for teachers who are visiting the country, and I host “Milongas”, dance parties for tango dancers every Saturday night. I am known for a warm and friendly host together with my wife, Annie.

What makes you happy?
It makes me really happy when I see my students on the dance floor enjoying themselves and practicing all they learned.
