Life & Work with Shani Rich

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shani Rich.

Hi Shani, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m the creator and owner of By Shani Rich Beauty. I began my career 13 years ago as a professional makeup artist. Funny thing is, it started with a coin toss. Having little to no experience applying makeup on anyone other than myself. The bet was simple if the coin landed on head’s I had to submit my resume to a cosmetics counter in a dept. Store the next day, if it landed on tails, I could do it when I felt ready. Of course, it landed on heads, and as uncomfortable as I was I submitted my resume the following day. Less than a month later, I landed my first professional retail makeup gig with one of the most prestigious company’s in the industry. Taking a look back at this 13 years journey, I realized it was the preparation I needed to get to where I am now. I poured all of me for years in my work to have these moments now. I truly believe you will always be where you’re meant to be, as long as you walk in your purpose.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This was not a smooth road. AT ALL. Becoming the women that I wanted to be took a lot of time. I like to say it took a lot of shedding. Shedding dead weight, coming to terms with myself that everything and everyone around me had to align with who I wanted to be and what I foreseen my future being. I knew I wanted to position myself as a women of business and influence. This required me to redefine myself, let go of behaviors that were regressive to my progress and not taking me where I wanted to go. I redefined what being an influential women looked like for me and began to brand myself to reflect that. Not just behaviors, I had to shed a lot of people I surrounded myself with, and that isn’t always easy. Every person and habit that I had accumulated couldn’t accompany me on this journey. I’ve had to learn to accept that. I’ve positioned myself in a space where I align with my ideal consumer, become more relatable to them and focused more on building this brand. NO, it wasn’t a smooth road however I’m grateful for all the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to say I am a woman of creation. I give people a space where they feel beautiful, whether it be through enhancing their beauty through makeup application or actually cultivating makeup &body products that cater to a specific need. I’ve become known for that. Yes, I do make cosmetics however it isn’t just in the cosmetics I make. Over my 13 year career, I’ve realized that, yes while my clients come to me to enhance their beauty, they come to me because they trust that I will always give them the space to define what the beauty standard is for them. By Shani Rich Beauty’s mission is to be a brand that leaves no one unincluded or left behind while elevating the standard of how products look, feel, and perform. I stand by that. I’m proud of that. Creating this brand which has given people the space to define what THEIR definition and NOT societies definition of what beauty is, is what I am proud of most. People can shop with me and know that they will always have a space where their standard of what beauty is, whatever that looks like, is celebrated and welcomed. Thats what sets me apart from everyone else, yes I provide a service, yes I sell cosmetics, but this brand holds space for EVERYONE. Everyone can be a “Rich Babe”.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I always say, “How you do anything is how you do everything”. I put my all into anything that I do and if I can’t put my all into it, I don’t do it. That simple. I don’t believe in showing up to anything if I can’t fully show up 100%. I do not believe in working until the point of burnout. Everything I produce has to be in alignment with what I believe. I only take up opportunities that are in alignment with my brand’s mission and purpose. I surround myself when people who are in positions with their businesses that I aspire to be in as well. Sitting myself next to individuals who are doing better than me puts me in a position to be the learner. Consistently learning and Staying true to my core values has been the root of all my success’. Walking in my purpose has brought success to By Shani Rich and as long as I continue to do that, I’m certain this brand will continue to elevate.
