Life & Work with Renata Velasco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renata Velasco.

Hi Renata, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am the creator of Renstyle. I grew up in the Czech Republic, where I lived for the first twenty-two years of my life. My journey into the world of art and design started with a degree in glass technology in my native Czech Republic, which eventually opened the door for me to accept a position working for a world-renowned Czech company that designs and manufactures glass lighting. After leaving the glass design industry, my next foray, some years later, into the world of design was as a floral arrangement designer. I worked for a floral design company based in Hollywood, California, to design unique floral arrangements for hotels, offices, celebrities and other high net worth clients.

I have always been fascinated with fashion and design and I was always especially interested in leather products because of the way they gracefully age with time. The more you wear and use leather products, the better they look and feel and the more “character” they acquire–and, of course, given leather’s durability, leather products and accessories could be pieces that will be part of your fashion collection for years to come. When I first began making leather purses, I had no knowledge or experience whatsoever. I had no idea what I was doing. I watched Youtube videos, sought the guidance and advice of a few friends and acquaintances who had experience working with leather products and I took a few private classes from a leather purse maker just to get down the basics. Other than that, I am completely self-taught and learned pretty much everything I know by trial and error. I ruined a lot of leather pieces before I got the hang of it but, eventually, my designs began to take shape and turn out exactly how I envisioned them. I have never been drawn in by trendy fashions and styles of the moment that can be found in any department stores or popular name brand shops; rather, I am fascinated by unique, one-of-a-kind fashion accessories and designs that I have seen in my travels around the world. Every piece I make and design must speak to me and be pleasing to the eye. It must be something I would wear myself–and that is why I named my company Renstyle. It is my hope that wearing Renstyle designs and accessories will be an expression of your own unique fashion and style.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been always smooth sailing. It has been a difficult journey and there were many occasions when I thought that I might not be up to the task. There were days when I would end up in tears and feel like just giving up. But when the fears and emotions subside, I remember how lucky I am to be pursuing my passion. I love what I do and the personal satisfaction I get from designing and creating my own collection of pursues and leather products is far greater than any minor setbacks I may experience along the way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I design and make women’s accessories, including leather purses, belts, clutches and necklaces. I source my leather from the best tanneries in U.S., Canada and Europe. My focus is to make one-of-a-kind pieces and unique designs.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
In our society, we have become used to and crave instant gratification; but the reality is that the best things in life take time, care, cultivation, and patience before they yield positive results. Remember that the things we think we don’t have time for are usually exactly the things we MUST make time for or everything else falls apart.
