Life & Work with Rachel Nicole Radewahn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Nicole Radewahn.

Hi Rachel, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My story? That’s a question. I spend so much of my time obsessing over how to tell other people’s stories it’s always interesting to share my own. Mine was ordinary and also unordinary, just like my art. I picked up a camera when I was old enough to hold one, and ever since, you won’t find me without at least a phone camera within reach.

Maybe it’s a flaw to not ever really be able to disconnect, but it makes people really happy, especially me. So that’s why I chose that for me; it’s a flaw that worked out in the perfect way.

I spent most of my younger years knowing I wanted to ultimately travel + capture love stories but shooting all of the other things that come first. Ever since capturing my first wedding, a tiny garden elopement in a little town in Wisconsin, I knew that I had found my forever thing. Capturing honest, real, and pretty awesome love stories for people who really just wanna remember the best day of their lives and who maybe want to do things a little more untraditionally and more true-to-them.

I’ve been shooting forever, but I’ve been a professional storyteller for about 7-8 years.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There has been just about every bump you can have on the road, but at the end of the day, I love what I do, and I am able to be around people I love all the time, capturing the best thing ever and all around, just living a really happy life (I mean, my work is literally to be staring at images of people on the best day of their lives, and also living it with them, it’s not too bad of a gig hahaha)

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a wedding photographer for the unconventional lovers! I love to tell stories, and my favorite stories to tell are the ones that are unique to the couple. This can truly mean anything, but I know a my-kinda-couple when I see them! They typically are madly in love and just wanna do whatever it is that makes them them. They often choose untraditional elements instead of doing what everyone else does, and really are just there to have the most fun and the best day ever!

My work sets itself apart in that it tells the true story of what happened on any given day that I’m photographing. All the little things that make a love story what it is, all the little imperfections, the things that went wrong, the hilarious moments… my art is made up of that. It’s not stand next to each other and smile without anything genuine to look back on when you see that image later. I like to tell real stories of real couples who are doing whatever the f*ck they wanna do.

I also have backgrounds in fashion, design, styling, hand lettering, and just about every form of art that you can feasibly do, and I like to bring all of those interests and skills into my work throughout the planning/styling process, whenever and wherever they might be helpful as it allows me to think outside the box, and use all my creative talents. gotta keep them sharp, so i stay inspired!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
It’s crucial for my work that I KNOW my couple. Not just their names, how long they’ve been dating, how they met, etc.

throughout the process leading up to their special day, my couple and I are texting, calling, DMing, and chatting on basically a weekly basis. I’m kinda like a built-in Pinterest board and wedding planner combined into one. I throw out style ideas, different ways of doing things that make more sense to my couple and their love story, chatting and joking, all the things besties do, because the better I know my couple, the better I can tell their story, and the better I can do my job.

I don’t do it because I have to do it; plenty of wedding photographers are out there doing that, I do it because I love to do it, and I genuinely want my couple’s day to be the best it can be. Weddings and love stories are my passion, and I think it shows pretty clearly in my work and all throughout the love stories I get to tell.
