Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Goodman.
Melissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my photography journey about ten years ago. I wanted to use my passion for art and capturing moments, emotions and experiences for others that told their story. Even though I love all forms of photography, I found my passion for Boudoir. I love how this type of portraiture helps women feel good about themselves and even if they think they are doing it as a gift for someone else, it ends up really being for them. Boudoir Photography is changing women’s self-perspective by showing them the beauty that I see and that others see in them. I want to be able to help women feel empowered and be proud of themselves regardless of what society tells us the right size or weight to be is. I love meeting my clients and hearing who they are and what they are looking to get out of their sessions. Seeing their faces when I show them a peek at the back of my camera makes it all worth it. I am working to change the way women see & feel about themselves. It’s not just about a beautiful image… it’s about strengthening our souls.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle with entering the boudoir photography world has been letting my own insecurities about what someone might think go. I am a mom to two amazing kids and I was worried about others thinking I was doing something inappropriate or risqué. I put in a lot of work to value who I am and once I did my own boudoir session, I knew that what I was doing for myself and other women was empowering and important. I’m teaching my own daughter significant lessons about self-love, self-esteem and self-worth and I credit that to what I have learned from being a boudoir photographer. My advice for anyone who is looking to delve into the amazing world of boudoir photography, push through those thoughts and comments from others and know that it has everything to do with them and nothing to do with you! Just go for what you want and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Melissa Goodman Boudoir is an experience, not just a photoshoot. I am proud of what I am doing to change the stereotypes about what beauty is and offer an inclusive and safe environment. I would say that my style is raw, organic & edgy and can tell a story to both the subject & the viewer. I am working towards my clients letting me use less and less photoshop to cover up things like scars or anything else they see as imperfections and truly see the value in who they are. My clients will tell you that they felt comfortable, had fun and usually come back for round 2!
