Life & Work with Maya Cryor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Cryor.

Hi Maya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started off working as a production assistant for E! Entertainment for a few years. I began meeting other folks along the way, creating relationships that led me to work on shows for Sony, TBS, OWN, and a few others. In 2018, I was hired to become an executive assistant to a director/producer. We worked on Netflix’s hit comedy special by Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones which I received an honorary Television Academy Award for my work. Later, we shot a few more projects including “Dave Chappelle: The Closer” and “Earthquake: Legendary.” Recently, we wrapped the “Martin: The Reunion” special for BET+ which will be out this year.

Currently, I’m focused on writing a TV pilot and building my business called The Executive Asset.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the struggles I have faced along the way as an overall creative is figuring out what to work on in specific seasons of my life. I have a thousand ideas flowing through my head everyday, but I can only choose one or two to focus on or else I won’t finish anything.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known as a writer and producer, but I also direct and act. I’ve created my own projects since 2016 whether that be a short film or a webs series. My goal is to be a creative full-time and share stories that I don’t see too often within the media space. Stories that highlight people of color in a positive light and I always want to place us in roles that we haven’t seen before.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Many people are always surprised by the fact that I can sing and dance. I’m just an all around creative. I’m good at a lot of things and at one point in my life I felt ashamed of that. Now, I fully accept it.

Also, I’m a business owner. I started my company The Executive Asset to help creatives focus on their purpose and passion by pairing them with well-equipped assistants who can aid them in their everyday lives.
