Life & Work with Mallory Ferguson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Ferguson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m 26 years old from the Southside of Chicago, Illinois. Chicago has been the murder capital of the world since I can remember. I always felt a bit guilty that I’m a black man who has flourished and has been afforded more, but growing up I changed that thought to I’m living for the black boys who didn’t make it today. They are walking with me sharing my successes every step of the way. I felt it necessary to share this because this is an important part of my story and I saw my first shooting at five years old. When I say, It could’ve been me, I mean that. My mom moved my sister and I to Minneapolis, Minnesota to finish our education. I graduated college at a private university debt-free in May 2021 because I applied to various scholarships. Because of all the violence that I’ve seen it’s always invigorated my art. I love to tell stories that make people feel better through visual arts with photography and film and my lyricism. I am also an MC Who shares inspiration through rap and spoken word. After graduating I moved immediately to Los Angeles to further my creative endeavors.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I hated and still hate being put in the box. I never strived in my academics and I still don’t care for it today to measure one’s success. I will admit, I played the game just to have my name mentioned in other doors, but it still never defined me. I also had two learning disabilities with dysgraphia and dyslexia. Lastly, Throughout my schooling, my grandmother had breast cancer and my mother had chrons disease. It was crazy hard to focus.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in portraiture fashion, wedding and editorial photography. I absolutely love capturing people in photographs. I love documenting. It is my life I would say was sets me apart from others is I do anything to help people if I had it. I started talking about me applying for various scholarships. I won over $155,000 of scholarship money and won a free study abroad trip because of my creative writing. I love overcoming obstacles and helping people see the beauty in themselves. This is where my photography in creative writing connects.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people don’t know where I’m from. People think because I’ve learned to be immensely kind. That it disassociates me with where I’m from. I never forget where I’m from. I emphasize it to everyone I speak to. Not to show people that I’m hard or that I have a chip on my shoulder, but to show others that my life is so much bigger than me and I’m not doing this for self-glory or gratification, but to inspire an impact as many people as I can.
