Life & Work with Kim Ann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Ann.

Hi Kim, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a love of reading, writing, and creating. But, who really pushed me to pursue my dream, was my son, Aidan. Aidan was a 25-week preemie that weighed one pound, eleven ounces at birth and spent 143 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Miller’s Children’s Hospital in Long Beach. For weeks, we were unable to hold him, but I could let him hear my voice. So that’s what I did. I spent every day sitting next to him, reading to him. This instilled in him a love of books that he still has today.

After years of reading books to my two children and seeing the types of books they liked and didn’t like, I started to get some fun ideas of my own. That’s when I decided to become an author. Now, I write the fun, imaginative, colorful books children love to read.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been easy, but it has been fun! Going into this, I knew nothing more than I had read and researched. I guess I would say, “I didn’t know what I didn’t know”.

Looking back, writing the book was the easy part and I had so much more to learn. Like how to find an editor, an illustrator, and a formatter. I had to learn how to market myself and my books, keep up with social media, advertise and grow my brand. I am always learn and finding ways to improve.

Today, I can say I have learned so much about writing and publishing that now I coach other authors and aspiring authors.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am happy to say I am an award-winning and bestselling author of more than twenty books. My children’s books focus on teaching important life lessons such as discipline, perseverance, and developing confidence while encouraging kids to read and use their imaginations. They are fun, imaginative, colorful picture books.

Recently, I moved into a new genre. My latest project brings quick, encouraging affirmations to super busy people to help improve their confidence and positivity in a busy, fast-paced world.

I also coach other authors and aspiring authors. I am proud to help them grow their businesses and follow their publishing dreams.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe we will see the line between independent publishing and traditional publishing thinning (blurring) even more. Independent authors are putting out high-quality, professional books and are being represented in media and bookstores more than ever. This will most likely continue in the future.
