Today we’d like to introduce you to Francis London.
Hi Francis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey as a designer came unexpectedly when I attended the Magic/agenda trade show in 2009 with my brother. At the time, my brother had a sneaker boutique and would go to the magic trade show to network and gain accounts from the top emerging brands. I fell in love with S.L.A.T.E, which was the streetwear section. If you are a streetwear enthusiast like me, it was heaven. After the tradeshow while flying back home with my brother, he told me I should start my own clothing brand, which I did. Understand God Loves You Duklyn (UGLYDUKLYN) was the entire premise on how I started the clothing brand due to my personal journey in life. The journey has been a long 12 years, but I must say I appreciate the path it has taken me to get where I am
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every journey will have ups and downs, but I can tell you that I enjoy this journey I’m on tremendously. I still have a long way to go but each day is a new adventure. Each breath is an opportunity to find other things to draw inspiration from. Whether I’m in the garment district in New York checking out new fabrics or in Ghana watching skaters at the local skate park, I enjoy every aspect of the creative process and how it is truly part of who I am as an individual.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the creative director for a brand called Uglyduklyn clothing. I specialize in streetwear apparel and leather goods. I’m known for being able to incorporate the Word Ugly and make it look and feel cool. Over the years, what I am most proud of is that I never quit. There were times that I thought it was over for me and the brand but something or someone kept telling me to push forward. What seems to set me apart from others is the hard work I’m willing to put in to get where I’m destined to be. I am obsessed with streetwear fashion and due to my obsession, I’ve been able to navigate within the system with no true fashion background.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Truthfully, I’m easily assessable via social media if someone wants to get in contact with me. As far as collaborations, I’m not in the creative space right now I just want to stay focused on the brand. I am looking to expand our team, so we are in need of photographers, graphic designers, content creators and videographers.
