Life & Work with Demetria Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetria Brown.

Hi Demetria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I didn’t come from a business minded family. I came from a family where you were taught to “be good, get good grades and get a job”! I did that.

I loved school because at that time, it was my way out…LITERALLY. I studied hard, went to college and measured my success with the salary that was attached to it. I had a child young, married young and had a home and drove a foreign by the age of 25.

I was living the dream to others. But a lie to myself. I was drowning silently.

In the life I lead now, my power doesn’t come from employment. My success isn’t measured by money. My validity isn’t defined by marriage or motherhood. It is now defined by positive impact.

Not long ago, I walked away from a long career in law enforcement with nothing but my last paycheck, my inner peace and relocated to Mexico.

I am proof that quitters still win.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Is crunchy peanut butter smooth? lol…..

I had many bumps in the road like many, but being betting on me when everyone counted me out was the best that could have happened to me!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Brown Girls Healing Academy.

I am creating a safe space for women to focus on being whole, healthy and happy!

I realized that many WOMEN aren’t happy. Not because they don’t want to be but because we are NOT shown the truth of it! We are not taught what true happiness looks like for us outside of relationships. Many of us are or were thrusted into situations with predetermined roles that are societal. Women are shown that we must be selfless. Some of us were made to feel that our commitment belongs to others before ourselves. We are expected to be everything to everyone BUT ourselves. We are daughters, sisters, cousins aunts, mothers, wives, bosses and more. The dreams we want for ourselves are often put on hold for the family’s sake so we slap a fake smile on and pretend to have it all while quietly crumbling inside.

Can I be honest?

Marriage is amazing when you are with the right one. But hell, many of us were or are married to “krumbs” instead of “Kings” and our children can be little devils instead of angels! Women may feel silenced because you can’t really say what you want without fear of judgment from family, friends or even judgment from a therapist.

I have created something special that’s just for us so we can have a place to be honest (not complain) in order for us heal, learn, grow and thrive in our chosen happiness! It’s called the Brown Girl Healing Academy. It’s a virtual service where we meet weekly, do the work internally together and meet in person to celebrate.

What sets me apart from others is that I offer something that does not exist for many women and that makes me so proud!
