Life & Work with Dani Van Buren

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Van Buren.

Hi Dani, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came to LA in 2007 pursuing a makeup career and attended MUD in Burbank. I fell in love with doing hair during my short hairstyling portfolio class there! My teacher advised I go to cosmetology school. Five years (and countless odd jobs I hated) later, I finally attended cosmo school at Toni&Guy and never looked back! I knew that shears and a brush belonged in my hands. It actually wasn’t until a few years after that I started experimenting with wild colors, and my love for hair grew even more! I love how far I’ve come the last nine years!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I definitely had struggles along the way. From battling mental illness and trauma to starting a family, my road has been anything but smooth! But I’ve also always been a risk taker, and I think my strength and tenacity has been my saving grace through it all. I also consistently battle imposter syndrome, and I have to remind myself every day that I’m worth it, even on bad days.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in vivid colors and extensions. I love getting wild and adding extensions to make a funky rainbow mullet! I’m most proud of how far my attention to detail has come, as well as my photography skills. I am forever a student, though, and always willing to branch out and learn new ways of doing things. I think what sets me apart is how I connect with my clients and how I go about achieving their hair goals.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I love taking risks and thinking outside of the box! I get these crazy but rad ideas for things, and I’ve definitely done the work to have them play out! Without risk, there is no reward. We never know what we’re truly capable of until we “jump!” I actually tell this to anyone who asks for advice is just to “do the damn thing.” Everything happens for a reason, I feel!
