Life & Work with Cindy Lam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Lam.

Hi Cindy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I developed the idea of creating a handbag line when I started practicing yoga. As I continued to go to the yoga studio and came to realize that there wasn’t a fashionable bag that was designed with quality materials and fine hardware. I decided to start my own line of bags that weren’t using cheap nylon and plastic fastenings like what was in the market. I launched my Kickstarter campaign in April 2005 to crowd-fund over $10k to create my first backpack. Since then, I’ve evolved my line to consist of backpacks, belt bags and cross-body bags.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve been in luxury retail fashion for over ten years so I was confident that my level of detail and materials I wanted to use would be of great quality. However, factoring in that I wanted to have my line of bags made in the US, it made it challenging to find a quality manufacturer with competitive pricing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My first backpack that I designed was inspired from the ideas of balance and intention (which I learned in yoga). Often times our lives are so busy as we keep up with work, social engagements, errands, family and perhaps trying to squeeze a workout in between. I want women to feel empowered that they can do it all while looking fashionable. Each bag I design is intentional with a balance that fuses fashion and functionality. All the leather is personally handpicked as well as the hardware and are all made here in Los Angeles.

What are your plans for the future?
I currently do pop-ups at the Melrose Place Farmer’s Market. It’s a great way to connect IRL. I’m planning to do more pop-up’s to socially connect.
