Life & Work with Brittney Ryan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Ryan.

Hi Brittney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I graduated from Goldenwest College Cosmetology school in 2005 and proceeded to assist for four years. My goal wasn’t to make a quick dollar. It was to learn as much as possible from the best in my industry, which is why I assisted multiple hair stylists and for more years than normal. Once I moved on from assisting I worked behind the chair doing hair color, haircutting, and styling. While I love every second of working behind the chair, my passion and dream was always also to work in the fashion and entertainment industry. I loved the whole collaboration of the wardrobe, makeup, and hair. I started practicing my styling skills and accepted any wedding jobs or unpaid styling jobs just to keep practicing and build up my book. A few years into my career I had a regular client, who was a producer on many well-known reality shows, ask if I could do a hair makeover on a contestant of her latest show Extreme Makeover, Weight Loss Edition. Once taking that amazing opportunity, I began doing all of the hair and makeup makeovers for the contestants for the next few seasons of that show. After that show and few other reality shows after, I kept working and networking and was able to get my foot into the entertainment industry, and I have been so incredibly blessed to have had it continue to grow since, leading me to where I am today. I have worked on numerous NYFW shows, have had many incredible celebrity clients, and have become a Local 706 member, which means part of the hair and makeup union for film and television.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As chasing any dream is, it has not been a completely smooth road. There has been working long hours, multiple jobs at a time in the beginning while building my clientele to pay the bills, a lot of putting yourself out there and being rejected, and a lot of self-doubts. Because in this industry, it is your craft and your talent, it is very easy to take rejection personally and fill yourself with self-doubt and that has probably been the greatest challenge I have had to overcome. Another obstacle is work/life balance. Working on sets can consist of 12-hour days and 80-hour work weeks. I have worked on projects where I have had to work 80 hours and fly straight from set to be home with my children for the weekend, to fly right back and work another 80 hours for eight weeks.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a celebrity hairstylist, hairstylist behind the chair in Huntington Beach, and Local 706 union member, which is the hair and makeup union for film and television in Los Angeles. While I love doing hair coloring and haircutting, I specialize in styling. I am would say I am mostly known for my more laidback, beachy vibe hair. I am mostly proud of everything that I have achieved in my career, all while being a very present mom to my two children. I have worked on numerous NYFW shows, have had many incredible celebrity clients, and have become a Local 706 member, which has led me to work on some amazing tv shows and movies.

I would say something that sets me apart is my calm energy, authenticity, and genuinely kind demeanor. I take pride in trying to be kind to every single person I work with.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that most people who know me or my work/brand might not know about me is that I have spent many of my days off doing haircuts for women in sober living homes. I am hoping to eventually reach as many sober living homes in Orange County as possible and help make the women who are getting back on their feet and starting to look for jobs again feel beautiful and confident. Another insight about me that most people don’t know about me is, I really value the mind, body, soul connection and I am currently in yoga teaching training, mainly because I find it all fascinating and want to learn more about that world. I meditate daily to keep myself grounded in this crazy world.
