Life & Work with Bianca Jazmine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Jazmine.

Hi Bianca, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My creative journey feels a lot like watching drops of watercolor paint spread its fingertips & explore the invisible paths of wet paper. My natural state of expression has always been fluid and boundless, and even as a child, there was a strong sense of intuition in the way I approached it. Of course, my chatty mind would (and still does) find its way into disrupting that flow from time to time. I’ve always been a smaller person, but my emotions always felt larger than the sun. Music, art, & writing all gave me outlets to play with the depthful sensitivity that can be both a blessing and a curse. I took up many instruments and was a part of musical theater performances in my childhood, but it wasn’t until I was 15 that I fully sang to an audience onstage by myself at a talent show. Singing solo that night unlocked one of my favorite feelings as a performer: it’s like this expansion in your chest, and you can almost feel your rib cage vibrating from the excitement, and it just feels right.

After that, I decided to enroll in vocal lessons and eventually recorded demos and original songs. Soon enough, I put together a band with talented friends, we started performing & building a fanbase in South Florida and toured around other states as well. But after the pandemic hit and the world came to a halt, I decided to hit the reset button and make the move to Los Angeles. Since I’ve been here, I’ve encountered so many incredible people, places, and opportunities that make me feel certain it was the right move.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Especially in the beginning of my journey, my biggest challenge (which later sparked huge personal growth) was learning how to advocate for myself. Setting boundaries and comfortably saying “no” are important main steps to this; but what really helped me overcome this issue was learning to effectively communicate what I do want, and expressing positive feedback when I received it. This made me not just a better collaborator but a more confident person overall too.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a multi-faceted artist living mainly in the world of music, with a strong appreciation for other performing and visual arts, such as photography, dance, and drawing/painting. As a musical artist, one of my favorite aspects is being able to use all of these artistic skills throughout the entire career process, like using my visual art skills for marketing materials or my love for dance to liven my performances. I’d say all of my favorite skills come down to one ability: to intuitively harmonize.

And I don’t just mean singing, but composing: taking different pieces that existed separately and connecting them together to form a greater whole. The musical skill for this is songwriting, but this harmonizing is also an undertone with my “eye” for photography and visual arts (when composing a photo frame), as well as freestyling dance choreography by weaving together different movements that flow into one connected sequence. I encourage everyone to look at skills or thought processes they can recognize (or introduce) harmony. It’s a core value in every area of my life, outside of the artistic realm too.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Pursuing your dreams in the creative world requires a healthy level of risk-taking. The career decision itself is inherently a risk – to reject a very stable and predictable career path in order to attract + build a lifestyle you truly believe in. It’s a rejection of everything our society tells us to do. Beyond this, the biggest risk I’ve personally taken so far is relocating to Los Angeles. I lived in Florida my whole life with all of my loved ones and friends, and adjusting to this major change hasn’t been the easiest. But it’s proving to be a worthy venture so far – and I know the opportunities of expansion here will provide learning experiences and success I can share with those loved ones back home.
