Life & Work with Aniya Kamara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aniya Kamara.

Hi Aniya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started doing hair in October of 2019 during the pandemic. I’ve always did my own hair prior to starting my business but refused to take clients until I perfected my craft on myself. Once I felt comfortable enough with my own work, I decided to make a website and announce I was open for business. It took countless installs and failed attempts on myself but eventually, I became comfortable and consistent enough to finally start my business!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first started back in 2019, business was slow at first which was expected. After a few months, my business started to pick up and I was hustling taking 3-4 clients a day working out of my bedroom. I then rented a suite near the national harbor and business was great. I did hair up until 2am most nights and did multiple lock-ins. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to move to Virginia abruptly. It was so abrupt that I had to move all my stuff out and get a hotel to take clients because I hate canceling appointments because I know how it feels to get canceled on the last minute with no other options. Unfortunately, moving that far away is like starting all over and building a whole new clientele. Business has definitely been slow and it can be discouraging sometimes. The only other struggle I’ve faced with my business is being too lenient with my policy which caused customers to feel like they could walk all over me. I had to put my foot down and enforce everything, no matter who you are in order to gain some type of control and order over my own business. I have also faced multiple dispute cases and chargebacks but I mostly have great experiences with all my clients!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Lace Specialist who specializes in lace wigs, closures and frontals. I am mostly known for wig installs. I am most proud of my T-Part installs which most stylists refuse to work with!! What sets me apart from others is that I am also a stylist that accepts squeeze-ins and emergency fixes. For example, it’s your birthday and your previous stylist botched your install. I will re-install and get you in ASAP!

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I did everything on my own regarding my business. I can give credit to my Best friend, Jordan who helped me move in and out of my suite when I needed it and being there for me through all of my hardships!
