Life and Work with Vanessa Silberman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Silberman.

Vanessa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up split the Bay Area in Northern California & Kauai, Hawaii. I started playing and learning electric guitar when I was about 11/12 years old when I live on Kauai. I moved to Los Angeles when I was in my late teens and started a band moniker called Diamonds Under Fire. I went to a music school briefly, through that got as many internships as possible (Epitaph Records, Warner Chappell Publishing & Steve Vai’s Favored Nations label) and got a music job right away while doing music. Since then, I have had almost every type of job in the business (from internet marketing & graphic design to A&R scouting, royalties/publishing, radio development of networks & artists to engineering, producing & songwriting) all while doing music, touring & releasing records.

Currently, I tour pretty much full time and record & development bands & artists through my artist development label (A Diamond Heart Production, which I started in 2014).

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, a very bumpy road but sometimes, very smooth. The biggest obstacle I believe is believing in yourself and finding that so deep inside & listening to your heart. Trusting yourself and that things will work out. I think the scariest thing is for people to take risks, jump & believe that they’ll catch themselves – my advice is to listen to your heart, cause life is short & don’t wait around for anyone to tell you it’s ok. Just do it! If you want something, build it. Trust yourself. If you want to tour or have a dream… you can do it!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with A Diamond Heart Production – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a national touring singer & guitarist, in the last 3 years, I have played over 550 shows. I have played over 14 tours around the U.S in that time & have played in the UK & Europe as well. A lot of those shows & tours were solo too. I have done this all while in my off time recording and helping develop bands through my new era artist development label A Diamond Heart Production. We’re in a new time, so I want to empower myself & other artists to get out there and work hard/create their dreams. My goal is to bring positivity & hope to people through music and reach as many people as possible.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Absolutely – the best thing I can do is set an example for other women & be out here doing it… touring & recording so other women see it. To a woman reading this… I’m doing this and so can you!
