Life and Work with Valerie Fishbain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Fishbain.

Valerie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Spread The Love was created by my husband, Zach and I. I first started making peanut butter with my Vitamix, a gift I received from my bridal shower back in 2013. It quickly became Zach’s favorite food and I just loved making it for him. So, we both decided to make this as our wedding favor to give to our 160 guests. Best decision we’ve ever made as our guests loved them and couldn’t help but request for more after the wedding.

We then decided to go into business and start Spread The Love. Since then, we’ve been selling at natural food grocers and supermarkets throughout the U.S. and are looking forward to spreading the love throughout the world.

We’re very excited to be doing our first product export event in Paris this September 2018. Our products were chosen to represent Los Angeles in La Grande Ecpicerie’s Rive Gauche LA pop-up.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, it has not been an easy road. In the beginning, I was working full time as a county social worker (not an easy job) and starting up Spread The Love by making and selling peanut butter on the weekend. I didn’t get a lot of breaks.

In addition to that, we had a legal battle against our trademark recently. That was very stressful financially and emotionally. When you have your own business, you have to accept that you would experience a LOT of challenges and work extra hard in overcoming them. Don’t let fear or anything stop you from reaching your dream. Fight for it if you have to.

Please tell us about Spread The Love.
I’m Co-founder and President of Spread The Love. I work on the look, feel and taste of our products and brand. I do most of our social media and website management. I lead our marketing, PR and creative team for LA’s fastest growing food brand.

As a company, our assortment of all-natural nut butters and jams are popular among customers and foodservice accounts looking for clean-label products. Our products are sold at by top merchants and distributors around the country. Some of our food service clients include; Porto’s Bakery, Barry’s Bootcamp and B.Good restaurants on the East Coast. We are different because we pay close attention to our process and produce our food in true small batches.

I’m very proud our high-quality and delicious products. My two faves are our organic peanut butter which won Clean Eating Magazine’s 2018 Clean Choice Award for their organic peanut butter. And our almond butter which continues to be Amazon’s Choice at

Who have you been inspired by?
My mom is always my number 1 inspiration. She was a single mom who raised 4 girls on her own. Although she didn’t finish college, all of her daughters did. She continues to be my rock as she takes care of my 2 daughters while my husband and I work. Life is sweet when she’s around.

Ellen Bennett, who is the founder and CEO of Hedley & Bennett. Her positive energy inspires me. She is a leader in community building and is very encouraging to other business owners and hustlers. I don’t know how she does it sometimes – she hosts events at H&B headquarters, travels, currently planning a wedding and has a very strong Instagram presence. I keep thinking that if she can do it, I can too.
