Life and Work with Tania Penkova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tania Penkova.

Tania, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in a small town in Russia and moved to Moscow with my family after high school when I was 17 y.o. At the age of 20, I traveled across the world to get a chance to spend a few months in the USA. Turned out that I’ve spent the past five years here rebuilding my life and creating a better future for myself and my family. I’ve always considered myself as a creative person so I tried to be surrounded by interesting and open-minded people.

The biggest part of my life was my dance career (or I might say hobby at this point since I quiet it about three years ago in 2016). Being in a dance community helped me to develop my talents and see outside of the box. It helped me to meet the most amazing people and learn a lot about myself. Through my dance school, I met my best friend who inspired me to travel. She misses me a lot now and I joke and blame that it’s all her fault that I live thousands of miles away from her now.

So, you would ask me why did I stay in America. Honestly, It was never my dream place. I just didn’t want to come back to Russia even tho I love my family more than anything. I was willing to take a risk and see how it feels like to live in the moment and do whatever you want. I had nothing to lose.

I lived in Rehoboth Beach, DE for the first four months during the summer 2014 and worked at the ice cream shop. Every morning, I jogged at the beach and every night, I hang out with my friends and talked about how lucky we are to be here. It was the best and careless time of my life. Everything comes to an end so after the summer was over, I needed to change my location. The choices were Miami or Chicago… life decided differently and within a few hours, I bought a one-way ticket to California and got there the next day.

I didn’t have a plan. Just a desire to make it happen. The next four years had been tough but still beautiful. I went through different stages from being a wild party girl to almost house a wife who stays home, cleans, cooks and waits for her lover to come back home. After many life lessons, I came to the realization that it’s time to slow down, find a balance and love yourself. It was time to honestly answer to many questions that had been in my head for a while.

When you live in Los Angeles, you must have an answer to the question that every single person will ask you. Why did you come here? I don’t know why I did but I know why I am still here. Because this is my home now. This is a place with endless opportunities. Only here you express yourself the way you always wanted. I do it through photography and traveling. These are my passion and desire to live, love and create.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road is never smooth but that is what makes it exciting. There are always going to be some bumps along the way. It’s your choice how to look at it and react. From my experience, what you think is the worst time in your life later one happens to be the best thing that ever happens to you because it brought you where you are supposed to be.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Los Angeles makes you become a person who does everything and nothing. 🙂 Most creative do not just choose one thing to focus on but experiment with whatever they find attractive.
I love a few things:
1. I love to travel.
2. I love fashion.
3. I love photography.
4. I love social media.

So, I bounce around and make it as profitable as possible. I’m a freelance social media manager and content creator. I do photography for brands, bloggers, companies and anyone who has a desire to get beautiful photos.
I love to travel and share some tips about different places on my social media and website.

Sometimes, I feel I should be focusing on and spending my entire time doing just one thing but then I get bored very quickly.

So, I keep myself motivated. Plus I get to meet so many cool people from different industries and places.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think we, women. create challenges for ourselves! The whole world is open to us and the are no limits. The only limit we have is our fears and thoughts.

I understand that the life is very tough for females in some countries with the strict rules, traditions, and religions but if we’re talking about Europe or America, for example, we are free and willing to do whatever we want. Let’s get out of our box and explore the opportunities.
