Life and Work with Stephanie Player

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Player.

Stephanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been successful when I follow my instincts, especially with my career. I’m currently living in Los Angeles as a branding specialist and graphic designer. My career started in San Francisco, where I applied to be an associate at a Banana Republic store. I ended up leaving that position after my first year and joined the HQ team. I worked extremely hard at an entry-level position and it was recognized. I also asked a lot of questions how people got the careers they wanted. Over the years, I worked my way to the position of Global Flagship Creative Marketing Manager.

When I realized corporate life did not reinforce my intentions of being of service with everything I do, I went back to school to get a degree in graphic design. Parsons offered me a scholarship to attend their professional program. My life completely opened up. I gained the technical skills to enhance my work and the confidence to become my own boss. I stepped into the light, serving as graduation speaker and got hired by Parsons.

My gift of being able to translate ideas, music, and mission statements into visuals have been implemented in the last 3 years. As a freelancer, I’ve designed and opened a donation-based yoga center in New Orleans, co-founded an affordable LGBTQ camp experience outside LA and designed an album package for a musician that inspires me and I respect greatly.

I would love to join a company who aligns with my values, work ethic and creativity in Los Angeles. The best teachers are those who teach from experience, so I hope to be surrounded by people who have unconventional experiences and challenge the status quo. I will continue to live a day at a time.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No such thing as a smooth road! Finding acceptance and compassion for others gives me ability to shift my energy to things that matter. It’s easier said than done, but if I treat others (including myself) the same way I treat someone I love, my life opens up. For example, what would it feel like if I treated my co-worker the same way I would treat my puppy? I would show up kind, loving and accepting, which is how I would like to live my life.

I would also share that anything is possible. I’ve stayed curious, asked a million questions to people that had careers I aspire towards and I trust in spirit/the process. I do a lot of work to trust in the process. That work includes, mediation, yoga, mindful eating and living sober.

Please tell us about Stephanie Player Design.
I specialize in branding and identity design. I use art direction and graphic design to translate a company’s intention. Visuals and creative marketing can make or break a company.

I work nonstop. If you are my client, I will listen to your music, research your projects and design with purpose. I work on a sliding scale, so I am able to take on nonprofit clients and large companies. I am also curious about life, which translates into my work. Everyday feels like a Sunday and a Monday combined. I love what I’m doing, so working all the time doesn’t feel like a burden.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
BE PATIENT and work hard. I often think that I will get what I want on my time frame, but careers take time. It also takes time to learn about yourself and what authenticity means in a career. It’s different for everyone.
