Life and Work with Sherrie Khazani

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrie Khazani.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sherrie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always knew I wanted to create. Ever since I was a kid, I was gravitated towards anything artistry related. My mom is a cosmetologist so naturally, that influenced me, even more, to pursue what I wanted. My dream at one point was to become a celebrity makeup artist, so from age 17, I worked different retail jobs to eventually get to working at MAC cosmetics. I worked there for three years (and loved it), before realizing I wanted to pursue something in corporate while still being in the beauty industry. While I was still working for MAC, I wanted to share my artistry with the world and post makeup looks on Instagram. At that time, I wanted a social media presence in the makeup industry and I wanted to work with different beauty brands. My boyfriend at that time made me feel extremely stupid for wanting to post my looks on social media and felt that Instagram was stupid. It was hard for someone to tell me that my passion and aspirations were stupid, and admittedly, I feel it held me back.

Eventually, I started working for a sales management company that works with various beauty brands and realized that marketing would be the main goal for me to pursue. Although I put my passion for makeup on the back burner, I still had a desire to create content and grow a social media presence. While working and going to school, I started putting outfits together and posting fashion-related and lifestyle photos on Instagram. Through hard work and networking, I have been able to grow substantially in just a year.

Balancing this with work and the school has been somewhat of a struggle, but I am so so thankful for everything I’ve been through to solidify what I really want and how to get there and to NEVER let anyone make me feel like my passions are stupid or unworthy. And also, never to be afraid to speak out! Recently, I started working with fashion brands to promote their products through my content on Instagram and I’m so proud of how far I have come!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As mentioned before, it was definitely NOT a smooth road. Some of the struggles I faced were people telling me no, and not believing in me. I feel like every success story contains individuals who will tell you that you’re not good enough! Another main struggle though was not believing in myself and holding myself back. Day by day, I’m trying to be bolder and take risks and I think that taking risks is completely worth it.
Some advice for other young women who just started their journey is to ELIMINATE everyone from your life that makes you feel like you are not capable of achieving your dreams! That is the number one most toxic thing to deter your success. Once you get rid of toxicity, you have room to flourish. Write down your goals, make a timeline and an action plan of how to achieve it, and go for the gold. There is literally nothing else that can hold you back beside yourself and your mindset.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
First and foremost, I’m trying to finish school. I’m on my final semester of college and I will graduate with my degree in marketing. I want to pursue a career in social media marketing and content creation. Using these skills that I’ve been trying to fine tune for years now to obtain my degree, I’ve been creating content on Instagram. Through my fashion and lifestyle posts, I seek to inspire others in any way I can.

What I’m most proud of is being the first in my family to graduate from college all the while growing in my career field, and being able to grow my Instagram account and flourish as an influencer. I would say what sets me apart is my artistic eye for content creation, photography and artistic skills, coordinating colors and making a feed cohesive and aesthetically pleasing for my target audience all the while creating brand awareness for the companies that I work with to promote their product.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Since I create content on Instagram I have lots of trusty apps that help me perfect and fine-tune my photos. The main app I like to use is Lightroom. This enables me to use certain filters and colors to ensure my feed remains cohesive. I absolutely love playing around with photos and seeing how I can tweak them to make them brighter, and more interesting to look at. It’s really amazing what a difference it makes.

Other apps I like to use is UNUM which helps me plan my feed ahead of time and see what photos look best next to each other before I post them. Facetune can be super handy too if I need to edit background clutter out of the photo, smooth certain objects, or emphasize on specific details in a photo.

For life, in general, a resource that helps me daily are meditating apps. I love meditating daily and I feel it really helps me clarify my thoughts and set my intentions for that day. I totally believe in manifestation and the energy of the universe, and meditating helps me focus on how I want my day to go, and what my goals are. I also like to keep a notebook with me most of the time so I can reflect on my day, write my to-do lists, and write down any other thoughts I feel is necessary.
