Life & Work with Shai Mackk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shai Mackk.

Hi Shai, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I like to say I started modeling in June of 2019. I’ve done a couple of shoots before that but I didn’t start taking it seriously until I moved back to San Diego (my hometown) after graduating from college. I was able to collaborate with an aspiring photographer and everything pretty much jumped off from there.

Once I started branding myself as a model and really putting myself out there on social media, more photographers in my area started reaching out to collab. Fast forward a year and a half, I’ve moved to LA (in the middle of a parallelogram) and working with amazing photographers, makeup artists, clothing lines, and makeup lines.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d say it’s been somewhat of a smooth road. There’s a couple of potholes here and there but that is more so pertaining to managing my own boundaries and self-image. As a curve model, it’s easy to start comparing yourself to the straight-size models that are always getting booked and feeling inadequate but at that point it’s up to me to strengthen my mindset and not relate my worth to the number of bookings I’m not getting. Staying positive and confident in yourself is key to being in this industry.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to think of myself as a jack of all trades when it comes to the kind of content that I shoot so I’d say I’m most known for my versatility. Whether it’s a beauty, lingerie, high fashion, or commercial shoot, I’m very good at embodying the image for that particular shoot. That’s definitely what I’m most proud of and what I think sets me apart from others.

What’s next?
I plan to become a model coach to help new models pave their way through the industry and also be an on-set pose guide to help models as well as photographers maximize their shoot time! I currently am working on doing a workshop as well where models get a free photoshoot while I direct them! Outside of that, I’m hoping to be on storefronts, magazine covers, and billboards in the next coming months based on my trajectory so far! It’s always better to shoot for 200% than 100%
