Life & Work with Sean James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean James.

Hi Sean, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I immigrated here from Australia to pursue my dream of working in the film and television industry. I had $500, my bike for transportation and my boogie board, and my scissors clippers and comb those I went nowhere without, I worked sometimes 15 hour days for $150 and would come home and cut hair late at night in my apartment on Virgina Ave in Santa Monica. It was not an overnight success story I really worked hard for what I have created in my life, I slowly built my clientele, and eventually got a job working at Fred Segal Salon where I was many incarnations including reception, manager, educator, hairstylist and art director, I work there until the day it closed I worked with so many celebrities there including Jamie Lee Curtis Meryl Streep, Matthew Perry and Courtney Cox from Friends, Phil Keoghan, Chris Hardwick, Daphne Zuniga Weird Al Yankovic, Faruza Balk, Jamie Pressly, Julie Bowen, Eugene Levy, Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse, Lindsay Lohan, Rufus Wainwright, Brad Pitt, Teddy Thompson, Leonard Cohen I also worked and Paris Hilton The Kardashians Kim Khloe and Kourtney, Dita Von Teese. I also did Courtney Loves hair for & years when she was living in Los Angeles. Over the years, I have worked with some incredible brands including Phyto, Kerastase, Rusk, Redken Fhiheat, and I NOW can be seen on Apple tv FNL (Fashion News Live) on the NEW APPLE TV app in “Beauty TIPS” and I am in production of a new show. I am also a 4x time Nominated makeup artist in the Local 706 hair and makeup union and currently working on NBC’s “THE WALL” and AMC TVs TALKING DEAD, working with the cast of “THE WALKING DEAD” which I have been working on now for 11 years. It’s so great to be part of such and incredible diverse team, I think that diversity is key to The Walking Dead universes success.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Film and television work comes and goes. It’s really not a stable business and unfortunately a lot of the other states around the country have offered much bigger tax incentives to bring the work to their states. The work started disappearing in the 90s, and then it just started drizzling away. My hope is that our Governor brings the work back to California by offering tax incentives to the industry to bring the work back to California/Los Angeles. I’ve written letters and called his office to suggest it, I think everyone should do this but don’t get me started about politics. I think California used to be the best place to live unfortunately I’ve seen a real divide between the haves and the have nots. It’s definitely challenging. Even with the pandemic going on, I stay hopeful that things will get better in California and that there will be changes. I stay positive, and try and stay in my lane, and keep heading toward life goals that I left my country family and friends to achieve.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Hair and Makeup. I am an independent contractor and currently reside at Matthew Preece Salon. I also work for Aim Artists, a boutique agency for hair and make up artists. I’m most known for looks that I have created for Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Hardwick, Weird al Yankovic and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Most recently, I created a new lifestyle sanitizing spray by company Beach BLVD created in 2018; it was originally a haircare brand, but we pivoted the release of our hair paste to create the best smelling sanitizer that exists, according to many of my clients, “The Shore Thing “and “Coast is Clear” they impress my senses every time I spray them. They are 4 oz bottles of absolute joy, and BONUS they kill 99.9% of bacteria, perfect for your pocket, purse, gym bag or car, I highly recommend you get a two-pack, one of each. I’m proud to say they are 100% MADE IN THE USA. I am yet to find another sanitizer that can claim that. And to have that on a table is not an easy thing to achieve. Our alcohol is one of the most refined alcohols so you don’t get that smell alcohol scent; you only smell the essential oils that we have, bergamot lavender and lemon and the other is a perfumed scent caramel orchid and jasmine that is incredible and I created from scratch with a chemist and perfumery, I’m really proud of it and is now carried at Chris Mcmillan salon and Matthew Preece Salon and our website and now on Amazon.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like the incredible talents that are here and the many cultures that live here, I love the Dodgers and the Lakers, I love the different foods and I find that it’s a real representation of the United America that I love. It is truly of a city of the world, it has some of the most wonderful people with ingenuity there are amazing trendsetters and incredible artists old and new like, Ned Evans, Alison Van Pelt, Ed Ruscha, Tom Everhart, Mike Habbs, Claudia Parducci, Marischa Slusarsky, Mark Ryden, Laddie Jon dill  and amazing mural artists, and incredible philanthropists and the incredible I love the beach having lived in VENICE for 25 years I feel like a local there although it’s becoming something I hardly recognize anymore. AirBNB destroyed Venice, artists don’t live in Venice anymore, they live in Eagle Rock and other parts of the city. What do I like least? Well the pollution is out of control, it just keeps getting worse. I’m amazed when I see adults throw trash out of the car and their disregard for their own streets. Don’t they realize it goes straight into the ocean? And the ocean and its creatures are super stressed from all of our garbage, just go to the beach the day after it rains; you will see so much plastic? PLEASE DONATE TO HEAL THE BAY. Stay positive and try and be a light in this city and the people I come into contact with, I take one day at a time and always start the day with a quiet meditation to hear what’s right for me and share my gifts with others.
