Life and Work with Savanna Sickel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanna Sickel.

Savanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for writing and inspiring others through calligraphy started back in high school when I would give friends Sharpie tattoos in church and was occasionally asked by classmates to write on their notebooks and binders during class. Savysoul was created during my freshman year of college and fast forward to today: it has turned into my business and passion!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have encountered (and continue to encounter) many struggles along the way of growing and developing Savysoul. Mostly, the struggles I face are within myself. I get caught up in the comparison trap or I wonder if I’m good enough, talented enough or smart enough to run my own business. I was told a while back by a mentor that “comparison is the thief of all joy” and that quote has really stuck with me. I have to constantly remind myself of what Jesus says about me. That I am strong, loved, worthy, and more than enough in His eyes; that’s what matters! If I could give a nugget of advice to young women that are starting their own journey of running a business or pursuing their passions, I would say just go for it! Try it out and step out of your comfort zone (that’s where all the exciting things are!) no matter how scary or risky it may seem. I know what you’re thinking, “Yeah, yeah it’s easier said than done…” and you would be right! It’s way easier said than done. But… if you never take risks
on something that has been on your heart (like using ALL your cash tips from serving tables for six months to start a business) you may be missing out of something really incredible!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Savysoul – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Savysoul is a shop with unique products as well as a place for all things custom. From logo designs, murals and wedding inquiries to custom painted denim jackets, grad caps and canvases, I’m your girl! I am such a people person, and I’m passionate about giving customers a fun and personal experience while working alongside them in whatever project they’re excited about. The heart behind Savysoul is using calligraphy to inspire others as well as bring their creative visions to life.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
Hmm… there are definitely more opportunities now for women than ever before. Regarding opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for, I think leadership positions are a great place. I believe that in general women are less driven by ego (sorry dudes!) and more driven by the eagerness to obtain what’s best for the well being of everyone involved. Artistically speaking, art is for anyone and everyone. There are a million extremely talented female artists out there, and I love seeing them thrive! There used to be a time where it wasn’t acceptable for women to be creative, sell their art for money, or even study art. I feel extremely blessed that I’ve grown up in a culture that embraces women artists with open arms.
