Today we’d like to introduce you to Rika Kelly.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my business to share the survival skills I have learned through yoga, to live everyday life fully and better way.
When I started yoga, I was so lost, lonely and depressed. I didn’t know what I was doing in my life and didn’t have any motivation to do anything. So, I devoted myself to practicing yoga every day, and eventually, I became a yoga instructor. Then, through seeing and hearing all the different kinds of individual needs of my students in group lessons, I couldn’t help thinking that my talents would be better served through personalized sessions oriented to each client. The experiences I have been through in my life allowed me to be very tuned in to peoples’ energy, I am now lucky to be creating personalized yoga sessions oriented to that experience and sensitivity, helping people deal with whatever obstacles they are going through.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth start of the new business? NO, but a smooth start of my yoga path to the business? YES.
As I said earlier, my bond with yoga is not from a fitness perspective, but the mind/body/spirit connection. So, it was natural for me to expand my knowledge of yoga by offering the private sessions to the clients.
However, from a business perspective, it was not a smooth start since I was “nobody” in Los Angeles. I felt like no one cared about this new girl and it didn’t help that I don’t have an American accent. But I kept my faith in myself and didn’t sell myself cheap. I didn’t sell my soul to get my business, but I also wasn’t stubborn.
If you are interested in becoming a yoga teacher, or even want to expand it as a business, the first thing I can tell is that you cannot try to be someone, Allow your identity to guide your yoga teaching. Nobody wants to learn from a copycat. Be generous and humble. Remember why you decided to enter this industry.
Please tell us about Ricaworld Private Yoga.
I offer private yoga sessions according to each individual’s core needs, which I get from a conversation and my observation of my clients, I then create personalized programs. Often times, people assume yoga is just relaxing or exercising. But, of course, that is not true. There are so many different types of yoga, with a variety of focus areas.
I specialize in the clients to be on “vacation mode” on the mat while I also kick their butts. And, I am proud that all of my clients are happy with their programs.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
As I was growing up, there were so many times, I had to suppress what I really wanted. I remember I had to act like a “super kid” because I was told I would be a source of shame if I misbehaved. And eventually, I felt like I didn’t know how to desire anything for myself.
But as I deepen my yoga practice and self-studies, I am a deep believer that we all are here for a reason and we all need to have a healthy lifestyle with a strong connection to ourselves. The way I grew up made me sensitive to the pain of others and the way I think about life, lets me share the light that shines within all of us.
