Life & Work with Ried Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ried Martin.

Hi Ried, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a dancer when I was two years old. My mom owns a dance studio, so naturally it became a huge part of my life. Dancing took me all over the country training at different studios and conventions. Tremaine Dance Conventions was one of those places. I started with them as a dance assistant on their company, which then led me to work for them as their full-time videographer and photographer alongside my mentor, Tony Bellissimo. We traveled 24 weekends out of the year and created content for Tremaine’s social media and other marketing purposes. It was an incredible experience being able to travel the country and do what I love! Being a dancer most of my life, I found filmmaking to be sort of similar.. like a dance with the camera. So it made for a really good transition from dancing to working behind the camera.

During this time, I had moved from my hometown of Knoxville, TN to the City of Angels! While living in LA, I used what I knew about dance and applied it to the camera. I started filming dance classes and videos for my friends and people started to catch on! I grew my portfolio as a videographer and photographer and have worked with people like Dulé Hill, Jenna Dewan, Kyle Hanagami, and Delaney Glazer to name a few. I’m still learning and growing, and I can’t wait to see what’s next! Right now, I’m just focusing on perfecting my craft… whichever windy road that takes me!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been bumpy and windy, but roads like that often lead to beautiful places. During my time as a dancer, I fractured my L3 vertebra, which ultimately forced me to stop dancing. Little did I know this was a blessing in disguise. I found my love for being behind the camera and haven’t turned back since… I mean I dance in my kitchen here and there but who doesn’t lol!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Director, Videographer, and Photographer in Los Angeles. I specialize in creating content for brands and events! Lately, I’ve been focusing on music videos and learning how to be a better Director. Photography is also a huge passion of mine. I really enjoy taking pictures of my friends and would love to get into more concert photography one day… once covid is over of course! As far as what I’m most proud of… I’m proud of the progress I’ve made and the things I’ve learned. You never stop learning. I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to see movement in a different way. I really enjoy being able to move the camera in ways my eyes follow movement.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
RISK TAKING IS HUGE! I believe that if you don’t take risks, you won’t be able to unlock your full potential. There’s also so much joy that comes with taking risks. You can’t lose. You either succeed, or you learn from it and grow so the next time you go to take a risk, it’s just that much easier. I’m all about learning. You never ever stop learning… and at least for me, I learn the most when I’m uncomfortable.
