Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancie Duong.
Nancie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Los Angeles and moved to Houston when I was 8. I lived my entire life in Houston and when I was 23, I decided it was time for a change.
One day, I packed up everything in my 2007 Corolla and made the 24 hours drive non-stop to Los Angeles. I started two businesses in a little bit under 4 years and now at 27, I am living my best life!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being so young and unprepared, I left Texas with $300 in my pocket hoping that I would find a job within the next week to help me survive.
Nevertheless, little did I know how competitive the job market is in Los Angeles and ended up down to my last few dollars within the next 2 weeks. I found myself ordering the 2 for $1 tacos from Jack in the Box, one for lunch and another one for dinner.
Being so down and out, I took a chance to utilize my passion for cooking and mixing it up in the fitness industry. That was how FreshboxLA born.
I borrowed $100 from my boyfriend and started meal prepping out of our kitchen and delivered them Monday- Sunday. I did that for 1 year before I decided to rent out a commercial kitchen to make the meals. From there, I was able to hire help in the kitchen and delivery!
Overall, my journey to get to Los Angeles was a hard one but surviving here was the ultimate test. I was in between yearning for a social life in a new city or bunkering down to work late nights and early mornings.
I chose to sacrifice having fun to build a future.
But in all honesty, my work is FUN. Both businesses was built from the ground up with nothing but love and dreams as a foundation. I’ve learned so much, grew into a driven woman, followed my calling and better yet, I found love.
None of this would have happened if I didn’t have my boyfriend to support my dreams no matter how far from reach it is.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Foxe Lashes, FreshboxLA – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Fast forward 3 years later, I saved enough money to start another business in the field that I love, which is makeup! October 2017, I started planning my next move and decided to start Foxe Lashes. We launched March 2018 and is growing a presence in the beauty industry!
I currently own two businesses, one in the beauty industry and another in the food industry!
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Los Angeles is a city for dreamers.
My advice for any girls out there that wants to leave a mark in this world, is to find something you’re really REALLY good at, master your craft and work hard. Nothing shines like originality, ambition and passion!
So, I hope my story will inspire a lot of girls to reach for their dream no matter how hard it is! If I can do all of this at the age of 27, you girls can too!
This world needs more girl bosses and it is an amazing time to be alive!
