Life & Work with Michaela Hupman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Hupman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I remember hearing stories my mom would tell me about how she had worked at nurseries in her younger years and how much she loved it. She has always known so much about flowers and plants, from the names to how to properly take care of them. She has always spent her free time gardening and has a way of making anything she touches bloom. I think a huge part of my love for floral work comes from her and seeing that part of her as I’ve grown over the years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say it has been smooth sailing for me. The passion has never taken a detour or gone off course, but really taking my floral work seriously right before a pandemic was not the greatest of timing to say the least. I can’t blame it all on that though, I do work full time to support living on my own with my two sweet cats and I find it hard to make time to incorporate this passion into my daily routine especially when those jobs aren’t consistently rolling in. Not to mention, floral work is much more costly than some might think! Having said that, I believe it would be a smoother sailing adventure had I had a bigger following and more people knew about my work before the pandemic because we’re all trying to support our small, local businesses when and how we can right?

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I design and create floral arrangements. Starting at the flower market in downtown Los Angeles, I let my love for colors, textures, nature, and seasons take over. My heart is in the lush, green outdoors and that is a huge inspiration in my work. I hardly ever go in knowing exactly what I want and usually end up walking out with whatever funky and unique florals caught my eye that day. When I create, it’s usually something more on the wild side. I prefer things to take on their natural movement and sort of dance around in my arrangements because I’m usually dancing around like a fool while putting it all together! Due to the pandemic, we’re all learning to work and live through, I am mainly doing custom orders right now which are available for local delivery. I have done work for music videos, styled shoots, and have weddings lined up for this year as well. I try my best to stick to more local and seasonal flowers as I truly care about sustainability but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t drool over some of the novelty flowers I occasionally see at the market that I can’t leave without.

How do you think about luck?
I would say luck and timing both have huge roles to play in my life and business. From making the right connections and networking that have gotten me some of my proudest jobs to taking this passion serious and moving forward with it right as a pandemic hit us all when we least expected it. It’s never always going to be good luck and perfect timing, I think it’s how we roll with the punches and choose to see things that make the biggest difference in our lives and work.
