Life and Work with Melissa Palmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Palmer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Melissa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
OSEA was envisioned by my mom, Jenefer Palmer who was originally inspired by her great grandmother a true wellness pioneer, natural healer and chiropractor who began her work in the 1920s. Prior to creating OSEA, my Mom built a wellness center and spa at Murrieta Hot Springs. When developing treatments for the spa, she’s unable to find a skincare line for her treatments that met her requirements on what she would put IN her body and she saw what she put ON her body as the same thing. So, as one does, she went out and created her own!

OSEA has been around for over 20 years and is still family-owned and operated today. My Mom and I make a great team. I lead business growth as CEO of the company and she heads product creation working with our team to make our passion for safe and earth-friendly skincare a reality. All of our products are crafted from sustainably-harvested plants sourced from earth and sea and loaded with active ingredients that treat the skin without causing harm to our own health or the health of our environment.

From start to finish, sustainability and impact is always at the forefront of our minds. So, we take every measure we can to ensure that our ingredients are of the highest quality, we package our products in the most sustainable way we can and take every measure to ensure that our carbon footprint is as low as we can get it. We’re aiming for carbon-neutral and developing initiatives to achieve this goal!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like everything in life, running OSEA has not been without its challenges, but I can say that we’ve always come through the other side and have learned so much from those experiences. I think ultimately my advice for other women or really anyone who wants to start something is just to go forth and do it! There will always be a reason to not do something or the thought that something isn’t perfect enough but you just have to start. There is always room for improvement in every aspect of life and the same applies to work. Plus, if everything is perfect from the start, then there’s no room to grow! And longevity is all about growth. Put simply, start somewhere! You have no idea where it will take you.

Please tell us about OSEA.
OSEA is a 100% natural-derived skincare and body care line rooted in earth and sea botanicals. My mother’s inspiration for the line really stemmed from her great grandmother’s love and appreciation for the ocean and seaweed. We infuse single-source seaweed from the waters of Patagonia into almost all of the products in our line as it is an incredible, nutrient-dense resource that is so transformative for the skin. Additionally, we include the most powerful natural-derived active ingredients that we can find to bring lasting change to the skin without compromising our health with unnecessary filler ingredients.

As a brand, I would say that I’m most proud of the community that we’ve built and continue to grow. The people that have supported us from the beginning are truly the fuel that keeps us going. We have always said that OSEA is more than just beauty. It’s about creating products that impact people’s lives in a way that doesn’t have adverse effects on the environment or their health. Beauty and skincare should be about empowering and amplifying what we all already have and doing so in the healthiest, most sustainable and environmentally friendly way is what we do best.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My secret to networking is to meet people as humans first. Every lasting connection I have made did not start with “what do you?”. It was a compliment on an outfit, a shared giggle, the coffee line at an event and learning about something that makes that person unique all before learning what some does or who they are. This serves two main benefits first I have met and networked with a wide range of people that seemingly have no one.

In this new world of internet culture, I think it’s more important now than ever to just go out and connect with the people around you because you never know who you might meet!
