Life & Work with Maya Rosalia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Rosalia.

Hi Maya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a teen singer-songwriter and actress. I started acting because my mom always took me to her auditions and I always had a passion for making others laugh. When I was nine, I had to move cities and leave all my friends and most of my family behind. I didn’t know how to cope so I started writing songs. It helped me grow as a person and as an artist. No one really knew that I was a singer-songwriter except some of my friends outside of school. In 8th grade, we had to do a project about what we were passionate about so of course I did singing-songwriting. After that, I got great responses and feedback to my songs. People said it really touched them and some were even crying! That’s when I knew I wanted to never stop doing it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been easy that’s for sure. When I was younger, I would get super nervous before performing on stage. I was such a perfectionist that when I messed up or made a small mistake, I would come off of the stage crying. It’s especially hard being in high school and acting in commercials or recording songs. It’s very easy to get overwhelmed but I’m hyper-focused on what I love which helps.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
If you ask my friends what I’m like they’ll probably tell you that I’m always doing something random to make people laugh or I’m giving an inspirational speech about the meaning of life. That’s who I am, I can be super funny and outgoing but at the same time, I can also be vulnerable and philosophical. That’s helped me a lot when I’m acting and writing. I can do a funny scene and dance on stage but, I can cry in scenes and write a sad song as well. I’m proud of my range and the fact I can make an upbeat dance song and a sad emotional song. A good example of this are my songs “Rearranged” and “Confidence”. “Rearranged” is a sad sort of breakup song and “Confidence” is a motivational, confidence boosting song.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I have so many. Most of them take place in summer with my family in Boston. I used to spend every summer with my family there. My cousins and I would make music videos and have dance parties, it was so special. I love my family because they’ve always been my biggest fans. Right after I made my two songs, they got my cd and they would sing the songs for me. Any summer in Boston is an exciting one.
