Today we’d like to introduce you to Maribel Moreno.
Maribel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was always in love with the idea of being in the beauty industry. I was a small town girl in Oregon, studying Biology at Oregon State University. I made the move out to Los Angeles and was a teacher at a private school in San Marino. I then decided that I wasn’t really feeling the teacher life and that my real passion was the beauty industry. Los Angeles, being big in the industry, I decided to give it a go. I started as a makeup artist about ten years ago. I was doing makeup for free for a photographer I met, who also was doing photoshoots for free, as to get both of our practice in and get our work out there. We ended up getting published in GQ, and FHM Australia. That was the beginning of my beauty career. Soon after that, I began in the film and television industry. As I progressed in that, I decided to learn to do hair and get my cosmetology license. As soon as I started cosmetology school, I fell in love with the art of hairdressing! After graduating from Marinello School of Beauty, I became a full-time hair stylist at a salon, XIV Hair Studio, and switched over from makeup to hair in the film and television industry. After building up my clientele, I felt inclined to keep moving forward. Always Move Forward! So now, I am starting makeup workshops for actors and actresses, and expanding my Bridal hair and makeup business, growing my brand of Maribel Angelica.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely not the smoothest road. It took a lot of determination and hard work. It took a lot of “no’s” and a lot of free work to get to where I am right now. I had to work full time and go to school full time. The little sleep I got is getting made up for now! Haha. My advice for any women trying to make it in this industry, as saturated as it may be, is to believe in yourself! You are different than the others; you are good enough, talented enough, better even. And if you don’t fully believe this, fake until you make it, and I promise you will become that person, and that career. Don’t ever give up. No matter how hard and long the road may seem, Don’t give up. It’s your dream; no one else is going to do the work for you. So, dream on and make your dreams come true!
Please tell us about Maribel Angelica.
I am a Hairstylist and Makeup artist, both full time in a salon, and freelance for film and television. I specialize in curly hair and blondes, are also mostly what I’m known for. I am most proud of the long journey I have taken to get to where I am today and the quality of work that I have to offer all of my clients. What sets me apart from others is that I have vast experience now in the beauty industry, and I truly am amazing at everything I do. I have my whole heart and passion in my work, and it truly shines through. I push my boundaries every day and push myself to keep doing bigger and better things daily.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Instagram is a huge part of my life, as it shows me what others are doing, and how I can keep up and maintain my styles to societies. Magazines, of course, are a huge part, as those as well, help me stay up to date with current beauty trends. A book that has helped me to do my ultimate best in life, which I suggest to almost everyone is “You are a BADASS – How to stop doubting your greatness and start living an awesome life.” By Jen Sincero. LIFE CHANGER!
