Life and Work with Lucia Rios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucia Rios.

Lucia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Twisted as I think many do, a side hustle, a way to generate extra income, a source of therapy and more. I had a need to be a stay at home mom because I was dealing with PPD (postpartum depression) I knew being home and working on myself and bonding with my child was the right move, however not having my own cash was uncomfortable for me. I have been working since I was 16, so I was very much accustomed to this.

I remember cotton candy catering as a new trend for parties on Pinterest, and of course being a Pinterest mom who had a million boards, this idea seemed like a fun fit. We (My husband and I) compared ventures and our small savings and cotton candy was what was the best fit for our budget to start. So, with a lot of research and faith, I started. I researched the market and suppliers and so on and I spent about 1/2 of my investment money (non-refundable) on sugars that were advertised in these insane flavors and I thought THAT is going to be my thing. I wanted to surprise people when they ate the sweets.

To my surprise, the sugars arrived and were absolutely disgusting, I felt like I made a huge mistake and it was a sign that I wasn’t supposed to do this. It was my husband who casually and in an attempt to soften the blow said ” babe why don’t you just make the flavors yourself” which I quickly shot down. After a day of sulking, I began to practice to get a better hand at making cotton candy and we casually tossed Tajin on it and it was like a giant spotlight came on! It was actually good!

I thought to imagine if the cotton itself was actually good how much better it would be, then I quickly turned to GOOGLE to research and dig and figure out how can I make my own sugars. Then, I changed my business model to be focused on creating flavors that were what I grew up with and our LATINO community. That’s when everything started to fall into place and I believe it was because it was an organic growth and flow rather because it was tied to who I am.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There definitely have been struggles, with anything truly great there will always be struggles. I am in a new role and a new world one I have never navigated before, so it is expected that I get lost and find my way, expected that I fail and loose. I believe the initial set back of basically loosing 1/2 of my investment was a huge “failure” that untimely ended up being a HUGE blessing because it forced me to look at alternatives.
In the moment of the challenges its hard to remember they are moments that are full of promise and purpose because it’s sometimes painful. But I fully embrace struggles now (most times, lol!) because they are set before me to guide me down the true path of where I am supposed to travel.

I think for the young women that read this or are budding entrepreneurs your future is SO EXCITING! There is so much groundwork that people are clearing and breaking for you its gonna be “LIT”, lol!
But, REALLY this is such an exciting time for women there is MUCH work to be done for equality but there is such a sisterhood that is building just know that you are NOT ALONE and you will be helped along the way! You just gotta go for it!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Twisted For Sugar – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Twisted is a gourmet, handcrafted cotton candy company that offers onsite catering via a mobile cart as well as an online shop where people can purchase and mail sweets to their friends and family. We specialize in Latin flavors but also take traditional flavors and TWIST them up with toppings! What sets us apart is a couple of things other than our focus and pride in our Latinx flavors, we also handcraft our sugars that result in a quality and unique taste experience.

I am most proud that we employ moms, as a mother myself I know that there are a much-needed outlet and sense of community that moms need and find best with other moms. So all of our workers are moms and moms that have said need of the community for mental health reasons. And honestly MOMS ROCK they are the absolute best workers and best to work with! #hiremoms

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
ALL the social media apps are essential! This is the absolute best way to market your business, interact with the audience and clients/customers, and network! And the best part its FREE!

I am signed up to a couple of FREE networks like “We all Grow Latina” and “createcultivate” and “Girlboss” who are always providing great info for personal and business growth, as well as I listen to a TON of podcasts when I work. Mostly, the podcasts are to help me with my peace and mental health and just overall to feel good, that’s part of my self-care.

Some of my faves are:
“Supermammas”
“Let there be Luz”
“Las Jefas Radio”( my own)
“Somos Padres”
“nos vemos en el swapmeet”
” Operah’s SuperSoul Conversations”
“Mom life YO”

And mystery shows because they are just fun! 🙂
