Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesley Reyes.
Lesley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started by doing friends and family for quinceañeras, proms, homecomings and while I was in college for interior design. I decided to try to make makeup artistry a career because I loved it so much. While I was living in Chicago, I took a Makeup Certification course, learned a lot and then just started to get to work – ANY work. I got lucky by getting to move to LA due to my husband’s job and landed a job at a high-end salon in West Hollywood right away. I’ve been extremely fortunate to do what I love, meet amazing clients and make people feel beautiful.
Has it been a smooth road?
The beauty industry is a very difficult and competitive field. Anyone can claim themselves a makeup artist and there are teenagers who can do some amazing things with makeup now! So, yeah, it’s hard to stand out and it’s still difficult sometimes even now with finding work. I feel that if you love something so much, it shows in your work and work ethic and your clients see that, which is what will set you apart. Nothing comes easy and it will always be worth it in the end if you’re willing to work hard.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lesley loves Lipstick – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a makeup artist, specializing in special occasion makeup. I do everything, everything my clients are willing to hire me for and I always love a new challenge. If you hire me, I will not let you down. I’m most proud of myself and the reputation I’ve built by being true to myself. I’m not scared to get out of my comfort zone and encourage my clients to do the same every now and then. My “Natural Gorge” is beautiful but sometimes you need to hit them with that glitter lid hunny! Makeup is art, so have fun!
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My mom is the ultimate hustler. She always worked at least 3 jobs growing up and never stopped. She was a paralegal, realtor, tax preparer, notary and basically anything else she needed to be while taking my sister and me to dance, violin lessons or wherever. She made it look so easy until I grew up and then realized that she had to of been doing some sort of sorcery to juggle everything she did. My work ethic is all because of her and she taught us that in this world, we can only work hard to have what we want. For me, there is no other mindset – you must go after what you want, nobody will ever just give it to you.
