Life and Work with Lauren Nikohl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Nikohl.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a singer/songwriter and model living in Los Angeles. I moved here about three years ago from Shoreview, Minnesota. I was inspired to sing and write songs by my dad, who does these things as his favorite pastime. I learned to play guitar and piano at a young age, and always had a deep love for creating music. Although I have been songwriting since around 2004, I finally decided to record my first EP in 2015. The EP was mostly self-produced, and there was a lot of learning as I went. After moving to Los Angeles in 2016, I recorded an EDM single “Against the Wind” with Billboard-charting and Grammy-winning producer Robert Eibach. Since then, I have released a few collaboration singles. Right now, I am looking forward to producing my first full-length album! I already have all the music written for it. This album is going to be very introspective and inspiring, and I hope to do some genre-blending.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have absolutely been challenges and obstacles. Money is and always has been a challenge, as the music industry can be very expensive and not very profitable at the beginning of your career. I’ve definitely made financial mistakes in the past, which ended up being learning opportunities in the end. Another challenge was simply believing in myself enough to pursue my dreams. My parents, while they love and support me very much, didn’t support me getting a degree in music, as they thought I needed a “backup plan” so I wouldn’t be a “starving artist in LA.” I’ve had many doubts about pursuing music, but I’m passionate enough about it that I persevered to where I am today.

My advice to young women who are just starting their journey is this: You can do anything you want to do, and you can be anything you want to be. It’s going to take hard work, but if you put in the work and persevere through your challenges, anything is possible.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am primarily a singer/songwriter, and I am very proud of how far my music has come since I started writing as a kid. The music that I have written in the past year or two is exponentially better than even the music I have released on Spotify right now, and I am so excited to get the new stuff out there. My style is a blend of pop, soul, indie/alt rock, and electronica. I don’t want to be a prisoner to only one genre, I just want to make music that people can feel deep within themselves. I currently have a pop/soul EP released, an EDM single, and a few r&b collaboration tracks.

I am most proud of the music I have on deck for my first ever album. It’s raw and vulnerable and inspires the listener to seek truth and love, as cliche as that may sound at first glance.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
My favorite book I’m reading right now is “How to Change Your Mind” by Michael Pollan. If you haven’t heard about it yet, look it up. It’s full of fascinating and scientific information, and will surely “change your mind” about the nature of reality. I also love the book “Man’s Search For Meaning” by Viktor Frankl. I first read that book my junior year of High School, and it completely changed my worldview. Frankl really puts suffering into perspective, as he was a Holocaust survivor. Another book that has helped me in my journey to self-discovery is “Siddhartha” by Herman Hesse. If you haven’t read that book, you need to read that book! It is so beautifully written and is so beautifully mind-opening.

A few podcasts that keep me grounded and help to expand my consciousness are “Mindful Living, Spiritual Awakening” with Dr. Marijo Puleo, “The Third Wave” with Paul Austin, and “Mikeadelic” with Mike Brancatelli.
