Life and Work with Katie Bostedt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Bostedt.

Katie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Design was always in my heart – whether I knew it or not. I grew up taking art classes and always had friends that shared that same love for creativity and making something out of nothing. When I was in high school, I took a newspaper class in which I quickly realized writing was not my strong suit, but the design aspects of laying out pages as an editor seemed so interesting. The following year I became an editor, learned InDesign, and hit the ground running designing funky spreads for the Lifestyle section. My senior year of high school I was able to be part of a design program at another school which really solidified my love of design, and from there I went on to get my Bachelor’s degree in graphic design. These days I am an in-house designer while also building my freelance business, working primarily with branding and web design clients.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In some ways it has, and in others it hasn’t. I was so lucky early on to get an internship working for a designer doing exactly what I want to do, and she had a huge influence on my career by providing me so many opportunities to not only to learn but also grow within an amazing community of women in LA. On the other hand, the process of building a business while working full time can feel slow and requires sacrifice. There have been countless late nights spent designing…which I already did all day! As for a piece of advice to young women – don’t be afraid to ask for opportunities. That internship that was so influential for me? I got it by emailing that designer to ask if she needed an intern after coming across a portfolio piece of hers on Pinterest. If you see something you want to be part of (career-wise or life-wise), just ask, because the worst they can say is no!

Please tell us about your business.
I specialize in branding & web design for small businesses making big impacts. These businesses usually have sustainable business practices or are working to improve the world around them by providing health & wellness services. Partnering with these brands is really what sets me apart (and is also what I’m most proud of) because businesses with socially-conscious values need to stand out from the crowd more than ever. From a consumer standpoint, beautiful branding & a clear website can be the deciding factor between purchasing from them and another brand that doesn’t have sustainable values. So it feels like a small way I can do my part to leave this planet a bit better than when I arrived.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Success is a funny word, and I think it looks different for so many people. For me, it has more to do with doing what I do well, rather than it being rooted in numbers or hitting milestones. That said, I think a lot of my childhood/young adult life had major influences on where I am today. From my parents giving me the opportunity to take art classes throughout my childhood, to going to high school with a large art program, to having friends that shared that love for creativity. All of those pieces added up and have influenced my journey in one way or another. And I think that cycle continues on throughout life…the things you do and people you surround yourself with influence you more than you may think and are playing into who you will become later in life.
